Bachelor and master degrees in music are professional degrees that are opted by an individual who would like to pursue music as a profession. Music like any other field of study requires a huge amount of practical knowledge, but there are colleges in India and abroad that offer distance learning courses for music.   2. B.P.A : This is a four-year course taken by students to become stage performers. The syllabus and job opportunities are similar to that of B.A.Hons in Music graduates.

  3. B.Mus: This is a three-year course which deals with the theory of music, performance, composition etc..; M.M (Masters of Music) can be pursued after B.Mus which would make you eligible for teaching music in popular music schools. The opportunities are similar to that of B.A.Hons in Music graduates.

  4. M.A.Hons in music This two-year course helps you specialize in a genre or an instrument. After completing post graduation you can perform as a musician or take up teaching. A wide range of opportunities in media and in the theatre is available for M.A.Hons graduates.

  5. M.Sc in Music, Media and electronics: Is a two-year course that concentrates on how music and media work together. There is also M.Sc Music technology. These courses tell how musicians rely upon different gears to bring out good music.

  6. M.Phil and PhD: These courses are where you do research about a certain genre or an aspect of music and publish reports about it. You can become a music teacher, a music critic, a music label manager etc. after finishing these courses.

  • Berklee College of Music of Boston, U.S.A is among the best music academies in the world. Berklee offers several correspondence courses over its website. These courses are selective and last for 12 weeks for a little over 1000$ a term. The next term starts from January and there are no set criteria for application, except you are supposed to know English. Learning at Berklee is an amazing opportunity if you can afford it. Berklee produces many prodigies in a year and most pop artists come from Berklee. That would be the best choice to make.

  • The Open University of London offers B.A.Hons in music and M.A.Hons Music. It is the leading distance education provider in the world.

  • Academy of Music and Sound of London offers B.A.Hons in Music and M.Mus.

Some of the Indian colleges that offer music-related degrees through correspondence are

  1. University of Madras, Chennai, offers M.A in Music, M.Phil, M.M and PhD with around 7000 rupees fees for two years. The application is possible through government talent examinations held in TamilNadu. B.Mus is offered by the university for a fee of 10,000 Rs a term.

  2. University of Delhi offers Masters of Art in Music with the affiliated colleges such as Miranda House college for women. The undergraduate programs in these colleges take CBSE or secondary education marks into consideration as eligibility.

  3. Calicut Arts College of Trichur, Kerala, offers courses of B.A in music and M.A in Music.

  4. Annamalai University offers B.Mus and M.Mus

  5. Rabindra Bharathi University of Kolkata offers B.A in instrumental and vocal music and M.A in the same.

  10. Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda offers diploma in performing arts (vocal) for a 1,800 Rs fee each year. The eligibility criteria would be qualifying the entrance exam set by the university.

Pursuing distance education in colleges dedicated to music like Berklee, The Open University and Academy of Music and Sound is a better option if you can afford. Otherwise, there are many colleges in India that offer regular music degrees. But only a few like the above-mentioned ones offer correspondence courses.
