Overview of Performing ArtsThe art form in which the artists convey expressions using their voices, bodies or inanimate objects is referred to as performing arts. It includes a wide range of disciplines which are performed in front of a gathering or audience. Theatre, dance and music, opera, magic, puppetry, mime and other forms of art exist in human culture. The school of fine arts forms an integral part of the human development process. IGNOU started the school of performing arts in the year 2007and came to function fully in 2009 with new faculty.The course provides ample job opportunities for the artists and in promoting the Indian arts at the global level. The study focuses on the disciplines of performing and visual arts. The program aims at meeting the demands of the artists in the society, in the educational arena and the professional field. The objectives of IGNOU include; promotion of aesthetics as a learning process in areas of academics and professional front. To have an appeal for the emotions, senses and to bring out the creativity through the modes of expression and varied activities with a diverse range.
Criteria for admissionThe candidate should have passed 10th class in the relevant discipline from a recognized university. He/she should have completed 15 years of age. The university does not conduct an entrance test for the admission. The medium of instruction is English or in Hindi. The minimum age is as on 1st January of the academic year. For vocational courses, there is no age bar. The minimum duration of the course is six months and the maximum is two years.
Certificate in Bharatnatyam (CPABN) Bharatnatyam is a classical dance of India which brings out the cultural aspects of diverse regions of India. The dance Bharatnatyam originated in Tamil Nadu and it is one of the major genres of Indian classical dance. The dance is usually performed by women. The dance expresses the religious beliefs and ideas of the spirituality of South India. The dance was founded by Bharata Muni. The course aims at providing the basics of the dance and enables the students to understand the Indian culture through performing arts. The program helps them to develop a holistic approach to learning through theory and practice. The course aims to provide distance education for students to pursue continuing education with flexibility. The students can avail the face to face interactions at the study centres for theory and practical sessions.
Certificate in Hindustani music (CPAHM) Indian music is ages old, it has a very long tradition which includes culture and heritage over thousands of years. Hindustani classical music is a traditional music of Indian subcontinent. It originated around the 12th century and is a North Indian classical music. Music forms an integral part of every Indian's life and in everyday activities. Indian music and the complexity of cultural aspects have integrated the people through music. Music brings out the emotions of human feelings in a melodious and rhythmic way, in a pleasing manner. Music conveys the message when words cannot express feelings and emotions. The diverse geographic demarcation has changed the music in form and shape. The course enlightens the learner the fact that there was only one music and through years of changes it has converted into the two types the Hindustani and Karnatak music. Due to many external factors, Indian music also changed. Hindustani music enables the learner to gain knowledge in theory and practical aspects of Indian music.
Certificate in Karnatak Music(CPAKM) The course provides basic knowledge of the Karnatak music and focuses on providing voice training, and the skills in singing Karnatak music. Karnatak music is the South Indian expression. The course emphasis on understanding the concepts of Karnatak music and its historic education. The learners are educated with the technical terms of the traditional music. Karnatak music is usually performed by a group of performers with the main singer accompanied by several other musicians playing different musical instruments. Various competitions are conducted in music in cities of Tamil Nadu and other places during events, functions, celebrations and festival occasions.
Certificate in Theater Arts (CPATHA) Theatre forms a part of the world heritage, theatre arts dates back thousands of years. The course enables the students to gain knowledge of the theatre which includes the cultural heritage of different places across the world. The art forms bring out the human relationships that exist in the groups and bring out in its art form. Theatre highlights the customs, traditions and the human behavioural patterns are prevailing in the society. The course emphasis on providing the theoretical knowledge and practical experiences to the learner.
Certificate in Visual Arts –Painting (CVAP) The course in visual arts educates the students in painting. The program aims at providing the basic knowledge in painting and develops skills in drawing. It develops the creativity in the learners and promotes aesthetic value in students. The course imparts the knowledge of medium, composition and enables them to use the tools to precision and choose the materials to create innovative arts. Visual arts include the art forms of drawing, printmaking, crafts, ceramics, sculpture, photography, film-making etc.
Certificate in Visual Arts –Applied Arts (CVAA) The course aims at providing the knowledge of aesthetic creativity with deep understanding. It enables the students to design and provides a pathway for them to become professionals in the chosen field. The program focuses on providing the training in design, the structures, elements and promotes for understanding the drawing skills in them. The learners are given ample opportunities to develop aesthetics sense and enable them to use the tools, the materials with precision and creativity. Applied arts include industrial design, graphic design, fashion design, interior design and decorative art.

They can choose to make albums and train other learners.
