Engineering courses offered by the Institution of Engineers through distance education mode

Introduction

The Institution of Engineers (India), IEI, started its journey in 1920 as a professional body consisting of Engineers of various domains to oversee the technical progress and also as a watchdog of the quality of manufactured products. In 1928 the institution started to provide Engineering education and it received The Royal Charter in 1935. The Institution conducts examinations, known as AMIE, in 10 Engineering disciplines and successful completion of the AMIE examination is equivalent to the Engineering degrees offered by different Engineering colleges throughout India. The qualification is accepted for employment in all government agencies and is famous in private sector too. IEI is recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization by the Ministry of Science and Technology and plays a significant role in research and promotion of Engineering advancements.

Courses offered by IEI

The institution is offering its certificate, which is equivalent to an Engineering degree, after successful completion of both the Section A and Section B examinations in the following 10 Engineering disciplines.
  1. Chemical Engineering
  2. Civil Engineering
  3. Computer Science Engineering
  4. Electrical Engineering
  5. Electronics & Communication Engineering
  6. Mechanical Engineering
  7. Material Science and Metallurgical Engineering
  8. Mining Engineering
  9. Production Engineering
  10. Textile Engineering


Headquartered in Kolkata, the IEI has 70 examination centers in India and abroad and candidates can choose the center according to their suitability.

Eligibility to join the courses

The Engineering courses were primarily designed for professionals willing to advance their career in the respective field and also for getting promotions to the senior level in various technical departments of the government; hence there is no entrance test to join the courses. However, the admission is not limited to professionals only and anybody meeting any one of the criteria mentioned below are eligible to join the courses.

  • A candidate whose age is minimum 18 years, with an Engineering diploma from a recognized institute can join the course as a Senior Technician Member.
  • A candidate whose age is minimum 17 years, after successfully completing the 10+2 examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or having qualifications approved by the council of the institution can join the course as a Technician Member.
  • A candidate whose age is minimum 17 years, having a university degree in Science with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics can join the course as a Technician Member.


Time limit to complete the courses

Since the Engineering courses cater to professionals, it is different from the regular Engineering courses and may take some more time to complete. The papers of all the disciplines are divided into two sections namely Section A and Section B. The maximum time limit to complete each section is 6 years and after completion of Section A the candidate is eligible for registration in Section B. If the candidate is unable to complete any section within the stipulated time then she/he has to re-register for that particular section. The papers cleared in that particular section will not be exempted after re-registration and the candidate has to clear all the papers again in that section.

Course fees

There are separate fees for registration and examination in Section A & Section B and fees are revised from time to time. The fees of registration and examination in all the sections are given here and the candidates should visit the website for details of the fee structure for different services.

  • The application fee which is the registration fee of Section A, for becoming a Technician Member is INR 4250 for applicants from India and Nepal, US$ 175 for applicants from SAARC countries and US$ 350 for applicants from any other country.
  • The application fee which is the registration fee of Section A, for becoming a Senior Technician Member is INR 8280 for applicants from India and Nepal, US$ 460 for applicants from SAARC countries and US$ 655 for applicants from any other country.
  • The registration fee for Section B is INR 4800 for applicants from India and Nepal, for applicants of other countries it is US$ 300.
  • Examination fee for both Section A & B is INR 3000 for candidates from India and Nepal, US$ 225 for candidates of other countries.
  • Re-registration fee for candidates from India and Nepal is INR 3500 and US$ 280 for candidates from other countries. Re-registration is required if the candidate is unable to complete all the subjects in any of the sections within 6 years and this re-registration is also valid for another 6 years.
  • For laboratory experiments, the fee is INR 7000 for candidates from India and Nepal and US$ 400 for candidates from other countries.
  • For project work, the fee is INR 3000 for candidates from India and Nepal and US$ 200 for candidates from other countries.

Things to remember

The examination is conducted pan-India basis and the pass percentage is comparatively low because many professionals are writing the examination along with students. Though the study materials are provided by the institution, the candidates should follow the reference books of respective papers to have a better understanding on the subjects. The classes of different subjects are conducted at the study centers depending on the number of students registered for coaching and the candidate should be in touch with the respective center to know more about the conduction of different classes.

This initiative taken by the Ministry of Science and Technology to upgrade the technical skill for such aspirants wishing to have an engineering degree equivalent to BE in different streams is possible with the able guidance of the institution.
