The busy Kolkatans also think in this way. Some of them do know about a heavenly place named Taki which is only at a distance of about 80 Kilometre from this busy metropolis. The calm, pleasant and serene beauty of this place on the bank of River Ichhamati rejuvenates people. Let us learn about this heavenly place in North 24 Parganas District of West Bengal.

Why Taki? Major attractions of this place

Taki is a quiet retreat very near to Kolkata and well-connected with this metropolis by rail and by road. Taki is on the bank of Ichhamati River. An imaginary line through the middle of the river marks the Indo-Bangladesh border in this sector. Many tourists travel in boats in the Ichhamati River and interact with Bangladeshi tourists in the same river. The sunrise and the sunset at the river make the nature-loving tourists spell-bound. In addition, tourists visit Machhranga Island which is at the confluence of Ichhamati River and Vasa River. It is at a distance of around 30 minutes from the mainland by motorboat. This island is a tourist spot and there is a Panchayat-run two-storeyed bungalow on the island for the tourists. The Panchayat has created a small replica of Sundarban (mini-Sundarban) in this island. The tourists can see the small forest of Sundari, Golpata and Hogla trees on this island. In addition, tourists also visit the palatial building of the former landlord of this locality. The dilapidated mansion is slowly being destroyed by the Ichhamati River.

There is an ancient temple of Nandalal Jiu which is also an attraction. Many people enjoy the evening puja (arati) in this temple. The tourists also enjoy the very pleasant and rare sight of fishes and kingfishers catching fishes from the adjacent pond. There is another Kali temple located nearby. This temple is famous as Kuleshwari Kali Temple. The Jora Shib Mandir (Temple) is more than 300 years old. Besides the tourists, local devotes also visit these two ancient temples. There is a Ramakrishna Mission at Taki. Tourists also visit the Mission complex.

For the fish-loving tourists, Taki is a heavenly place. Delicious Ilish (Hilsha), Parshe, Topshe, Pabda, lobsters and various other fish are available at Ichhamati. Mutton and chicken are readily available. Chhana Malpoa is a famous sweet of Taki. During winter Patali gur is available.

Not only that, relatives living in both sides of the border come to meet each other on this day on Ichhamati. The BSF and Bangladesh Border Guards allow the relatives to meet each other on this day. The tourists can easily understand the pain of the Bengalis divided by an artificial border. While most of them have come to India, some of them are still in Bangladesh.

Many tourists prefer to return to Kolkata on the same day. However, those who want to stay at Taki, can book Taki Tourist Bungalow, Public Health Guest House, Machhranga Island Guest House and some other private hotels. All the guest houses provide reasonably good accommodation and high-quality food.

A nice article. I did not know that such a place existed near Kolkata. We come to know about the vastness of our country when we read about such new places. I had been to Kolkata long back and had a sightseeing tour of the city also but did not hear this name probably because of the distance involved as it can not be covered in the city tour.

I have some interest in writing on travel related matters and places of interest so I usually go through such articles in the magazines or net. I have also not heard about this unique place near Kolkata.

It is a very informative article posted by the author so that the readers are getting aware of such beautiful place near one of the metro city of our country. Kolkata is already a great tourist place as it has so much to offer to the domestic or foreign tourists and addition of this place makes it much more attractive.

Thanks to the members who have gone through this article. At the first instance, I would like to state that Taki is a very ancient locality and the Kolkatans are generally aware of this tourist spot. But very few people outside West Bengal know about this excellent place very near to Kolkata.

Tourists can enjoy the sublime beauty of River Ichhamati when it is in full flow during monsoon. In a peaceful winter evening, they can sit on the banks of the river and enjoy the sunset. They can also enjoy the beauty in motor-boats. However, they should not try to land on the other bank of the river, which is in Bangladesh.

As Taki is a very ancient locality, the temples are also very old. The family mansion of India's former General Shankar Roychoudhuri is also at Taki.

If the tourists want to return to Kolkata on the same day, they can do it very easily. But I am sure that the beauty of River Ichhamati and Taki won't allow them to do so.
