IntroductionIt is a fact that because of our activities our environment has degraded and to protect our environment we have to take certain steps for its further degradation. One of the major reasons for the environmental pollution is waste and improper disposal. When factory and household wastes are dumped into water bodies, it ends up polluting water. When it is dumped on land, land or soil pollution is caused. And if it is burned, it results in air pollution. Hence waste is required to be managed properly.
Waste managementWaste management is the collection, transportation, and disposal of garbage, sewage and other waste products. Treating solid wastes and offering solutions for recycling items are part of waste management.
WasteAny substance which is discarded after being used and is of no use any more is called waste. We all generate waste every day in form of papers, packaging materials, plastic bags, old newspapers, fruit and vegetable peels etc.
Watse is of two types - biodegradable and non-biodegradable.
Biodegradable waste: This type of waste rots easily and mixes with the soil. Leftover food, vegetable and fruit peels, papers and leaves are all biodegradable. They decompose easily in soil with the help of microorganism a such as bacteria and fungi.
Non-biodegradable watse: This type of waste does not rot. It doesn't mix with the soil. It takes a very long time to decompose and hence, remains in the environment for a long time. Plastic bags, synthetics, glass bottles, plastic canes and bottles, aluminium foils are all Non-biodegradable wastes. If they are not disposed of properly, they can clog land and water bodies, choking drains, and pollute land and air. Also, the animals and birds which accidentally eat them die due to choking. So we must keep in mind that these waste not only pollutes our environment but are also harmful to other living beings.
Waste disposalMunicipal cooperation looks after the collection of waste from homes, streets, hospitals and public places in towns and cities. They use various methods to dispose of this waste. Some of them are:
Open dumping:: The waste collected from a town or city is loaded into trucks and taken to the dump yard located far away from the city or town. The waste is dumped on the land and left it open. This is known as open dumping. Waste disposed of in this way often rots and pollutes the land, air and underground water.
Burning:: Sometimes, collected waste such as chemicals, medical waste and other poisonous materials are piled and burnt in large furnaces. The burning of waste can often generate harmful gases and pollute the air. Burning of waste left behind the ash which further needs to be disposed of in a careful manner.
Landfills as garbage dumping sites:: Waste is also disposed of in ditches dug into the ground. These are called landfills. They are usually located outside the city or town. Waste is thrown into the landfills until they get full. Once they get full they are covered with the layer of soil. This is done to prevent waste from rotting and polluting the environment. Once the landfill is closed, it can be developed into a park or parking place.
Compost pit:: Compost pits are used to dispose of household and garden wastes. A pit is dug in the ground and the waste is thrown in it. Once the pit is full, it is sprinkled with water and is left to decompose. The waste is turned regularly and cow dung or earthworms are added in it to speed up the process of decay. The decomposed waste is called compost. It can be used as manure for plants. This natural manure is safe and is healthier for the growth of crops. It is a natural fertiliser and is better for crops than the chemical fertilisers.
Reduce, reuse and recycleThese are the three most important ways for waste management.
Conserving the environmentThere are many more ways in which we can help to save our environment.
ConclusionIt is important that we should always find ways to save our environment and try to keep it clean. This is sad we don't care for our environment and let it get polluted. We can do wonders by following few steps mentioned in the article.
A nice and exhaustive article on how to take care of our environment.
Keeping our premises clean and more importantly maintaining the environment in a human friendly and eco-friendly manner is the challenge of the day. Only the governing body is not responsible for it. It requires a total mindset change and determination by both of us - Govt at one side and we, the citizens, at the other side.
There are people, who are neither aware of these basic needs in our society nor they want to cooperate to the regulatory and monitoring agencies. Our feelings for our environment are not as sincere as they should have been and that is why we all are being punished by nature for neglecting the eco-system around us. The pollutants and chemical hazards we are dumping in the environment are coming back to us only in one form or other damaging our health as well as the health of the generations yet to come.
Mass awareness of conservation of the environment is the need of the hour and Govt efforts at a herculean level are to be geared up if we are really serious to maintain the green Earth as a habitable place.
Waste is increasing day by day in kind and in size. In the broad sense, waste is classified as biodegradable and non-biodegradable. Biodegradable wastes can be managed using different methods. All these are well conceived and used by almost all civilized societies. In this case, the concerned authorities are giving more attention since most of them will create immediate after effects.
Decentralized management of biodegradable waste can be propagated and made popular in cities as well as in towns. There are different methods developed for this. Biogas is a product that can be well used by every household. Processing the bio-Waste result in biogas or in bio-manure or in both, depending on the method of processing. Fitting a biogas plant, pipe composting, windrow composting, vermicomposting etc are different methods available now. The slurry coming out from the compost pit can be used as a fertilizer or as a vermicide. A small vegetable garden can be started in the yard or in the terrace so that every family gets double benefits by treating our own waste.
Non-biodegradable waste can be reduced by planning. Reuse or reduce. If there are agents to take up recycling their help can be used.
Waste management actually aims at the pollution control also. Waste in any form is affecting the nature as well as our surroundings. Environment has to be kept clean, for this pollution from different sources has to be controlled. Plants are playing a very important role in controlling the atmospheric pollution. Plants take in the carbon dioxide and give back oxygen, the most wanted for animals.
Man, compared to any other animal, is destroying the atmosphere by producing all sorts of waste either solid or liquid or gas forms. These are real wastes or by products of human activities. Man cuts several numbers of trees for different purposes, many of the products of trees become waste after a particular duration. Newspapers, books, notices, etc. are products of trees. These products after use become waste. Look around us, how many news papers, books, and other products from papers are getting dumped as waste. This action is actually polluting the earth in two ways, first by cutting the trees and second by dumping paper wastes. So waste control starts from preserving the nature.
We need a little bit cautious to handle environmental pollution and to develop awareness among the public should be our basic task to lessen environmental pollution. The trucks, autos or even our bikes ejecting out unburnt Carbon due to a poor performance of the carburettor should be our priority. With a little care of using cotton - bags in lieu of plastic would arrest the environmental contamination in addition to the hazards of its consumption by cows, Buffaloes and also creating chances of blocking drain pipes and sewerage - system. It has been even more dangerous to allow the industrial contaminants to dump into the rivers creating a chance of health hazards of the people taking bath in rivers or rampant use of such water for domestic - purpose. Fifty - per cent of wastes constitute plastic - bags and the vast pile of these wastes for an appreciable time pose health - hazards of all.
The prompt initiatives in handling different wastes such as the wastes generated from hospitals, industries, hotels and households can be arrested with the familiarity of its efficient handling.
Different tips have been suggested by the author to handle the wastes making the environment clean and its application would certainly helpful in combating wastes.
A good article regarding waste management. As the population is increasing in the country, the wastes that are being generated are also increasing. A proper management of this waste only will save the land from pollution.
In many places, there is a habit of dumping the waste in waters. This is very bad. After completing the Vinayaka Navaratri, many idols made of POP and painted with hazardous paints will be immersed in tanks and ponds in various places. These paints and other materials used in making the idols will contaminate the water. That is why many are advising us to use idols made out of clay. But still, the awareness in public has not come.
More awareness is to be brought in the public about the waste treatment and all care should be taken to treat them properly.
