Career opportunities in Oceanography

The study of oceans is an emerging subject in many Universities across the world and there is a rising demand of oceanographers. To become an expert in oceanography one has to start from bachelor's degree and relevant work experience. There is a need for environmental protection and water management and the role of this subject is vital.

Introduction

We very often ignore some subjects which provide us good career opportunities. Certain categories like Hospital Management, Hotel Management and Tourism Management fall short of recognition in business Administration courses while it is the turn of Ocean Sciences and Maritime Engineering when it comes to Science and Engineering courses. The reason is that the thrust is mostly laid on core branches like Computer Sciences, Electronics and Mechanical Engineering courses. But Oceanography too is one of the prime subjects which has its glory all time with the benefit of India having a long coastal corridor.

About Oceanography

It is the study of the science of oceans. A deep insight into various aspects of the oceans, their boundaries and their continents will give the learner more expertise in this. As a student, one would be familiar with the study of the seas, its coastline, estuaries, coastal waters, shelves and the ocean bed. It is an integrated study of various principles of Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Meteorology and Physics. The developing countries having coastal line are more concerned about the Ocean resources and Oceanography provides a good career in this area.

If you want to take up a career as a Oceanographer

An oceanographer is nothing but a Chemist, physicist, biologist and a geologists who is an expert in ocean studies. There is much career potential in this field and one can explore the best feasible chances to know:

  1. To explore the vast realm of the unknown, which exists within our oceans.
  2. To study the Marine resources
  3. To understand the motion and circulation of the ocean waves and their physical and chemical properties,
  4. Collecting samples, conducting surveys, analyzing data with the aid of sophisticated equipment in the sea for long hours to study the nature of the ocean.
  5. Also to analyse how these properties affect coastal areas, climate, and weather.
  6. To enable to learn the basic sciences to study the world's oceans and coastal waters.

Depending upon the areas of specialization they work in several fields such as marine biology, geological oceanography, physical oceanography and chemical oceanography.

There are various Post graduate Courses available in many of the Indian Universities in various branches of Oceanography. Few of them are:
  1. M Sc in Oceanography
  2. M Sc in Marine Biology
  3. M Tech in Ocean Engg
  4. M Tech in Ocean Technology
  5. M Sc in Oceanography
  6. M Sc in Marine Chemistry

Job avenues for student pursuing Degree in Oceanography or relevant field

There are plenty of job avenues available in the market for a professional in the field of Oceanography. One can become a Scientist/Engineer/Geologist in the research organisations under the Govt. of India or other state Government services. Despite the fact that hey are always at the risk of varied oceanic climatic conditions, Ocean Engineers need to be mentally tough and physically fit to carry out fresh challenges every time. The Public and private sector undertakings need professionals and technicians to conduct surveys and research oriented jobs to conduct surveys, collect samples and analyze data in the sea. Geological Survey of India, Meteorological Survey of India, Department of Oceanography, etc. regularly make recruitment notification for various jobs. Career opportunities in PSUs like Oil India, ONGC, Magzon Dokyard Ltd and HSL can also be explored. Teaching profession in most of the reputed colleges or universities is always an open option. Acquiring knowledge in Computer Applications like Digital mapping, Remote Sensing and Computer modeling is essential for better performance in the assignment undertaken. There are also job avenues in the areas of offshore Oil Recovery, Marine metals and corrosion, Environmental Protection, Global Climate Monitoring, Renewable Energy, Underwater Vehicles,Marine Transportation, or Naval Architecture and Defence.

Wrap Up

Career in Oceanography helps you to perform well in various fields of earth science like the study of ocean currents, waves, geology of the sea floor, physical properties within the ocean and across its boundaries. It is the study of all things that is related to ocean that makes you to explore new avenues in career path.
