IntroductionPatriotism cannot be instilled in a day so we must teach our kids our patriotism from childhood itself so that when they grow up they become responsible. As Youths are the future of our nation and have a major role to contribute for the prosperity and the growth of the nation so it becomes very essential that we inculcate a sense of patriotism in them from childhood. There are many examples of people who laid their life for the nation and gave our nation freedom from Britishers. Indian freedom fighters had a strong feeling of patriotism. They did not care about themselves and worked selflessly for the nation. Today also there many people who are dedicatedly serving the nation in whatever way they can. However, the feeling of patriotism is slowly fading so we must work on our kids to develop this feeling of patriotism in them. Here are a few tips on how we can do this:
Develop awareness about the rich heritage of IndiaIndia has a rich culture and traditions which is a treasure of our country. Talk to your kid and tell him about the history of our country. Take him to the museums to make him aware of our rich culture. Take him to visit historical monuments so that he may know about the great people who constructed them and the stories related to them. If you don't know the stories behind them then you must read the books to illustrate it to your kids.
Tell stories about the independence struggleThe story of our independence struggle is very inspirational in itself. It will make your child understand the sacrifice of our ancestors for freedom of the nation. They will come to know how they fought with the Britishers till they drag them out of our country. You can tell them about them about the freedom fighters of India like Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Rani Laxmi Bai etc and their story how they fought for the freedom. You can buy books related to the history of our country and may ask your child to read them. These stories will teach him the values of valor, sacrifice, freedom and self-respect.
Teach the importance of national symbolsYour kid should know about the national animal, sport, bird etc. He /she should know the national anthem and should have respect towards it. He/she should be taught that he/she should stand up when anywhere the national anthem is played. Apart from this, they should be taught that they should not destroy the national property and should not allow anyone to destroy it. They should be taught not to throw garbage, littering on the road and should contribute well to keep their country clean. They should know about our national flag and emblem. They should know that what each colour in the national flag signifies.
Encourage participation in patriotic activitiesRepublic day and Independence day are the two important days for our country. Tell your kids about these days. Ask him/her to participate in school function on these two days. Let them participate in the fancy dress competition, dress them as freedom fighters/leaders and teach them their famous dialogues. Also, teach them the patriotic songs. Take them to watch the parade on the republic day and flag hoisting ceremony. That will definitely inculcate a feeling of patriotism in your kid.
Visits monuments having historic importanceIt is a good idea to take your kid to the monuments having historic importance. Places like Jallianwala Bagh, Rajghat, Amar Jawan Memorial, Wagah border, Jallianwala Bagh, Sabarmati Ashram have some historic stories behind them, teach them those stories so that they may inspire from their stories.
Be a role modelAny learning of a kid starts from home, also patriotism is related to emotions not to the knowledge so you must be a role model for your kid. Children get inspired if they see you being patriotic. Therefore, you must possess the behaviour of a responsible citizen. Do not talk ill of our country in front of children; not even as a joke. This will help to instill a feeling of patriotism in your kid.
Final wordsOur country will be in safe hands if we contribute to developing patriotic feeling in our kids. Parents should share stories of the freedom struggle of our country. Schools should organise interaction between defence personnel and children. Parents and schools can jointly invite defence personnel such as members from the Army, Navy and others to share stories of war, etc. This will attract the attention of children and provide them with an opportunity to have close interaction with these persons. Patriotism should be taught to children to transform them into better citizens. As children are the future of the country, we must strive hard to make their future bright. This will be a tribute to ancestors who fought for the freedom and sacrificed their lives for it.
