There is no dearth of career opportunities in different fields of Science in India. Very unfortunately, though, science students mainly try to join medical and engineering streams. Many students and their guardians think that if the students can't join these two streams, that would be the end of the road. However, that mindset is not at all proper. There are thousands of opportunities in different branches of Science and guardians and students must be aware of these and be ready to learn about these opportunities. Such career opportunities have been increasing day by day with the progress of the country.

What is Geology: Branches of Geology

Geology is a branch of Science in which scientific study is conducted about all constituents of the planet, their internal and external forms and underlying processes. Geology can also be defined as the scientific study of the structure and history of the planet. It is also known as Earth Science. Geology can be further sub-divided into more than hundreds of branches, Some of the well-known branches are Economic Geology, Environment Geology, Biogeology, Marine Geology, Hydrogeology, Structural Geology, Volcanology, Mineralogy, Petrology, Paleontology and Petroleum Geology. All these branches are extremely important and continuous research is going on in each of these fields.

Indian institutions where Geology is taught

Nowadays there are hundreds of universities all over the country and a considerable percentage of these universities is in the private sector, but very few private universities offer this subject to the students. Even now, most of the universities and academic institutions offering Geology at Under-Graduate level and Post-Graduate level are Government (Central or State) Universities or Engineering institutes.

Some of the universities and other academic institutions which offer Geology at both levels are: Delhi University, University of Calcutta, University of Madras, University of Bombay, Dr. Harisingh Gaur University (Sagar), Guru Nanak Dev University, Jamia Millia Islamia, IIT-Kharagpur, Banaras Hindu University, IIT-Roorkee, Osmania University, Pune University, Jadavpur University, Puducherry University, Goa University (M.Sc. in Marine Geology), Anna University, IITISM, Dhanbad and IIEST, Shibpur.

Furthermore, only select colleges (under these universities) offer Geology at Under-Graduate level. As for example, very few colleges (out of more than one-fifty colleges) under University of Calcutta offer Geology at Under-Graduate level. Same is true for Delhi University.



Career Prospects for Geology students

Now we will discuss the career options for the Indian students of Geology. These are as follow: -

#1: Research and teaching

Many Indian students join research work being carried out in various branches of Geology in Indian as well as foreign universities. As the scope of the subject is ever-increasing, there is no dearth of opportunities in research work.

The scope of teaching is also getting improved. Some students of Geology join teaching faculties in various universities. But till now, Geology as a full-fledged subject has not been included in schools. So, Geology is only taught at the Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate levels in India.

#2: Joining Government jobs: Geologists' Examination

Geology is one of the very few subjects in which the UPSC holds an examination every year. The selected candidates join Geological Survey of India (HQ: Kolkata) and Indian Bureau of Mines (HQ: Nagpur) as Class-I Officers. The Post-Graduates in Geology can appear in this recruitment examination, and, if selected, start working as Class-I Officer of the Central Government.

#3: Joining mining PSUs and companies

All the mining companies (both in the public sector and in private sector) recruit Geologists. Many students of Geology join NALCO, BALCO, HINDALCO, ONGC, Oil India, HCL, Coal India, SESA-Goa and other mining companies as Geologists. These jobs have good career prospects.

#4: Working in foreign mining companies

Many students of Geologists from India are hired by foreign mining companies in Australia, Malaysia and South Africa. These foreign companies provide a good salary, other perks and career growth to these Geologists.
