Climate Change Resilience: Agriculture and Housing


This article deals with the problem of climate change. The focus will be on certain steps which can be taken to combat this problem especially in the agricultural sector and in the context of the construction of housing structures.

Over the course of this century, climate change is going to be a critical issue. There can be no doubt about the fact that over the next few decades, average temperatures are going to rise and average rainfall will decrease. At the same time, extreme weather phenomena will become more and more common.
In the midst of all these, India is likely to be one of the prime sufferers. Droughts and floods, as well as rising sea levels, are very much a danger that we will have to face. In fact, rainfall variability has already become a big problem in large parts of the country. Soon we will have to contend with far more severe consequences.

Hence, certain actions are required to combat this menace. Owing to the massive nature of this issue, actions in only two fields, that is, in the field of agriculture and in the field of housing shelter construction are considered.

Climate Change Resistant Agriculture


Climate change can affect agriculture in a massive way. Lower rainfall will obviously lead to more and more crop failures. Temperature change will also not spare the agricultural sector, thus putting the livelihood of farmers as well as the food security of the nation in peril. The following steps can be considered to be possible remedies.

Smart Irrigation


Unirrigated areas suffer the most during a drought. In India almost half of the net sown area is unirrigated. In states like Madhya Pradesh, the number is even higher. As such crops can become easy targets during a drought.

To combat this drip irrigation can be a useful idea. Through this not just will the purpose of irrigation be achieved, but water loss will also be prevented as compared to traditional methods of irrigation.

Research and Development


It is well-known that India has a reasonably good number of agricultural universities. These can be utilized to research upon various genetic improvements which can make crops resistant not just against drought-like conditions but also against rising sea waters in coastal areas. In fact, a certain amount of R&D has already been done on this. Such innovations need to be implemented.

Trees as windbreaks


Climate change can also lead to increased wind velocity which can cause a serious amount of soil erosion. To combat these shelterbelts or windbreaks may be devised using trees as a tool to break the wind speed.

Climate Change Resistant Housing


Certain changes can be made in the prevalent style of the housing so that increased temperature, reduced rainfall, and floods are combated. The first two is much more essential in urban areas which are already suffering from the heat island phenomenon.

Roof design


There is a need to make roof designs much smarter so that they do not get blown away in case of a storm. Appropriate designs can be selected for each climatic zone. However, in coastal areas, roofs should be stronger to withstand high-intensity storms which are likely to become increasingly common with climate change.

Passive cooling


Passive cooling refers to reducing temperatures with the help of physical constructions rather than electric devices. In the context of housing, windows and ventilators should be appropriately positioned so that wind flow is not obstructed. Reflective material for roofs as well as devices like solar chimneys can be used (To put in simple terms solar chimney can be considered to be a ventilating device which uses the sun's rays to increase the temperature difference and thus lead to the faster exit of the hot air.). Using such methods would help reduce dependence on air conditioning devices.
It is worthy to note here that almost all traditional housing forms prevalent in India rely on ventilation for passive cooling.

Rainwater harvesting


As already mentioned climate change can lead to rainfall variability. To combat this various household rainwater harvesting techniques may be used. The simplest one, of course, is rooftop rainwater harvesting where rainwater is allowed to collect on the rooftop and flow to a storage tank via conducting pipes.

Among the various steps mentioned in this article, most can be implemented by individuals and households. Implementing these steps in actual practice would only be beneficial for us in the longer run.

A good article on the effect of climate change on agriculture and measures to fight with them.

Due to the pollution and mixing of green house gases in the atmosphere the threat of climate change is looming high on the Earth. The scientific community is very well aware of this fact and are trying to suggest measures to combat it.

Climate change on a massive scale is not a joke. It can wipe out the whole of humanity as well as animal life from the planet. The various measures as given in this article and many other large scale mitigations are required to be started in time so that by the time there is a severe climate change, the human race can do some efforts for survival.

There are some world level agencies which are monitoring climate change and requesting the countries to reduce the carbon emission in various forms. It is not a small job as it requires that all the old industries are to be converted to the atmosphere friendly machinery and clean fuels are to be used everywhere.

So actions and monitoring is required at all the levels in this matter.

A good article about the important measures to be taken to withstand climate changes. In India, we are observing the changes already and from year to year, these changes are becoming more severe. In a year, for more than eight months, we are having the summer effect. To overcome the heat problem we start using ACs more and more and the gases being emitted by these ACs further increases the problems. Rains are becoming fewer and they are not evenly distributed. Even in winter, the temperatures are high and in the nights we are experiencing too much cold which is leading to health problems.

So we all should think about how to preserve the atmosphere and we should strive for that. The natural resources are coming down from day to day and there may be a severe crunch of water and good air shortly. We may see a day we all will be carrying oxygen bottles in our backpacks. So it is our responsibility to see that our actions and lifestyle methods will not hamper the chances to the next generation people. It is our responsibility to see that we will hand over this mother earth to our next generation at least as we received if not improved.
