Online applications open for IIRS Dehradun Geospatial Technology & Applications 2019 admissions

The Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), Dehradun which is a unit of ISRO, Department of Space Government of India has announced the 2019 schedule for admissions to its training and education programs in Geospatial Technology and Applications. The Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS) at Dehradun is an education, training and research institute under the aegis of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Department of Space Government of India. IIRS has announced the 2019 schedule for admissions to its training and education programs in Geospatial Technology and Applications.

The programs are as follows -

M.Tech. in Remote Sensing & GIS

This program is of two years' duration with four semesters. In the first two semesters, students focus on course work, In the last two semesters, they work on a research project, this being as a team member of a research group and worked on under the mentorship of qualified experts. The M.Tech. degree awarded to successful candidates is presently awarded by the Andhra University, Visakhapatnam (India). Totally there are 40 seats available (including all specializations).

Specialisations for this program are in:
  1. Agriculture & Soils.
  2. Forest Resources & Ecosystem Analysis.
  3. Geo-sciences.
  4. Marine & Atmospheric Sciences.
  5. Urban & Regional Studies.
  6. Water resources.
  7. Satellite Image Analysis & Photogrammetry.
  8. Geoinformatics.


Admission process

Students for the M.Tech. in Remote Sensing & GIS course are selected based on an entrance test and interview. Govt.-sponsored candidates need not appear for the test but will be required to appear for the interview. Foreign candidates also need not appear for the test but need to appear for the interview through an online medium.

The entrance test and the interview are scheduled to be held between 4th and 6th May 2019. The likely venues: Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Dehradun, Delhi, Guwahati, Kolkata, Nagpur, Raipur, Varanasi, and Thiruvananthapuram.

PG Diploma in RS & GIS

This program is of 10 months' duration, with the specialisations the same as the first seven mentioned for the above-mentioned M.Tech. program as well as in (i) Natural Hazards & Disaster Risk Management and (ii) Spatial Data Science.

Admission process

Candidates will be given admission based on merit, with academic records taken into consideration. Interviews may also be conducted of those who are eligible or short-listed for selection. This admission process applies to both, self-financed candidates as well as for Government-sponsored/nominated candidates.

Last date to apply: 15th April 2019.

Master of Science in Geo-information Science & Earth Observation

This course is of 18 months' duration, with two parts:
(i) Modules 1 to 10 and 17 to 23 is of 3 ½ months' duration, which is pursued at IIRS.
(ii) Modules 11 to 16 is of 4 ½ months' duration, which is pursued the Faculty ITC, The Netherlands.

The specialisation for this program is in Geoinformatics (M.Sc.-GI).

Admission process

Self-financed candidates must appear for an entrance test and a subsequent interview, with academic records being taken into consideration for eligibility and selection. Preference for admission will be given to Government-sponsored/nominated candidates, who need to appear for an interview only and not appear for the entrance test. Relaxation in educational qualification and age may also be considered for these candidates.

The entrance test and the interview are scheduled to be held between 4th and 6th May 2019. The likely venues: Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Dehradun, Delhi, Guwahati, Kolkata, Nagpur, Raipur, Varanasi and Thiruvananthapuram.

Last date to apply: 29th March 2019.

PG Diploma in Geo-information Science & Earth Observation

There are three modules of this program, with the first of four months and the second and third of three months each. The specialisation for this program is in Geoinformatics (PGD-GI).

Admission process

It is the same as for the PG Diploma in RS & GIS (refer to details above). Government-sponsored/nominated candidates will be given preference, with relaxation in educational qualification and age likely to be considered for these candidates.

Last date to apply: 30th April 2019.

Note: M.Sc.-GI and PGD-GI are IIRS-ITC Joint Education Programme (JEP) with ITC/University of Twente, The Netherlands and are subject to continuity of JEP.
