Introduction Those people who are citizens of India but are staying in another country and wish to cast their vote in the elections in India cannot cast their vote online. There is no online voting facility for any category of voter in India or abroad. Overseas voters, like the voters in India, need to enroll their names on the electoral rolls through a simple online application. Once the name is entered on the electoral roll, the overseas voter has to come to India, go to the polling booth with his/her passport to show as proof of identification and then vote. If the name is not on the electoral rolls or the overseas voter comes to vote without a valid ID proof, he/she will not be allowed to cast a vote at the polling station.
Eligibility of an overseas voterYou may well ask, 'Who is an overseas voter?'. You can register your name as an overseas voter on the electoral rolls of India if:
(i) You are a citizen of India by birth/domicile/naturalization; and
(ii) You have not acquired citizenship of any other country.
First-time voters who are not overseas can fill up the relevant online forms to get included in the electoral rolls.
