IntroductionVijayawada is the second largest city in Andhra Pradesh as on date. This place is also known as Bejawada. The new State Capital of Andhra Pradesh which is under construction is in between Vijayawada and Guntur. With the advent of this new city Amaravati, these three cities will get amalgamated and will become the biggest city of Andhra Pradesh. Vijayawada actually was treated for many days as the commercial capital of combined Andhra Pradesh. This city is about 250 kilometers from Visakhapatnam as well as Hyderabad.
But due to the improper planning and short-sighted nature of the politicians here, Hyderabad only has been developed and the other cities were not given required support to get developed. Anyhow the city is growing now. But whether Vijayawada is a big city or a small city, it will stand special due to the temple of Kanaka Durga on the hill of Indrakeeladri.
History of this placeThis place was rocky and the hills in this place were causing obstruction to the flow of River Krishna. There was no cultivation and the entire land was lying as a wasteland. The legend says that Lord Shiva intervened and made a bejjam(Hole) through the hills there and then the river started flowing through that hole. Then the Wada (Village) formed with a name Bejawada.
There is another story which is very well known to many people. Arjuna, the son of Pandu Raju and one among the five Pandavas, performed tapas on this hill Indrakeeladri to please Lord Shiva and to obtain Pasupathastram. He fought with Shiva unknowingly and he obtained the blessings of Lord Shiva. Arjuna is also known as Vijayudu and this place obtained name Vijayawada as he has performed penance in this place.
The TempleThis temple is on the hill Indrakeeladri and one will have a beautiful vision of Krishna River and Vijayawada city from this hilltop. Many people feel that this temple was constructed by Arjuna only
The Kanaka Durga temple and the history of this temple were mentioned in many epics and many people of Telugu states worship this Goddess. In Andhra Pradesh, this temple is the second famous place after the Venkateswara Swami temple in Tirupathi. The Kanaka Durga deity here is known to be Swayambhu(Self-manifested). Malleswara Swami temple is also there on the hill. The temple is located in the heart of the city. The Bus stand and railway station are very nearby.
There are steps to go up the hill and there is a road by which buses, cars, autos will run. The well-known Prakasam Barrage was constructed on River Krishna and the barrage is just by the side of this temple only. People who visit this temple will also visit that place.
