This is the reason that various construction companies and firms are emphasizing that their employees should complete SMSTS courses or at least enrol in them.

What are actually SMSTS courses?

SMSTS stands for Site Management Safety Training Scheme and the course will include know-how and techniques of health and safety management and concerns at the project site. Now, these courses are kind of being made mandatory in the construction industry as new regulations have been brought for the safety and security of workers at construction sites. The SMSTS courses are mainly provided by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). However, now many third-party organizations have got the approval for providing the courses to interested candidates.

What is the actual SMSTS course content – what does the course cover?

If you do not know, the SMSTS course takes full 5 days to complete. If you want to know about the SMSTS course content, read on WeDoTraining.com. The subjects which are covered in the course are as follows:
  1. The Health and Safety at Work Act – This point in the course helps in getting a quick overview letting the site manager know what trouble that can come in case there is an accident and someone gets killed or injured at the work site.
  2. Construction Design and Management Regulations – While it may not be a prerequisite to carry paperwork around, it is important that all the required documentation is filed as you might be asked to hand it over during an audit.
  3. Method statements and risk assessments – This depends on the site of the construction work. Risk assessments have to be made based on site-specific hazards.
  4. Behavioral safety – This is an important thing for sure, but comes with lots of questions and doubts. An experienced person, who is moving from site work to management might have some understanding regarding the behavior of workers on site. However, for a novice it is quite difficult to understand as to where an accident can take place.
  5. Management of occupational health – This is a comparatively easy thing to manage and understand. It is nothing but the awareness that when working on the site, all our senses should be alert. We must work with our eyes and ears open. This ensures the safety of the people working at the place. In fact, the work also gets done in a hassle-free manner and can be completed within the given deadline.
  6. Electricity – Electricity is important at any construction site for smooth working. However, it has to be ensured that the person who is working on the electrical installations should be adequately qualified and certified in the job. The work should be done in the most professional manner and no one should have access to the live cables. Protection from high voltage should also be provided.
  7. Excavations at the work site – Digging and excavations at the construction work site are quite common things. The area around the dug up or excavated place should be shuttered safely for avoiding any kind of collapse. There should also be proper warning signs on the edges for that added safety and protection.
  8. Working at a considerable height – Working at heights is quite dangerous and quite common at construction sites. There are many things which have to be taken into consideration in such cases. The scaffolding should be erected by certified and experienced men. The netting provided should be strong and effective in case there is an accidental fall. Along with these, edge protection is also a vital thing. The scaffolding should be well adjusted so that workers can work conveniently at the right height. This space at the construction site should be regularly inspected to ensure that there are no breaches or lag of any kind.
  9. Demolition of a structure – It is quite common that an old structure is demolished and in place of that a new structure is built. The area of demolition is quite a dangerous one. The area has to be isolated completely. People working on the project should be equipped with safety gears and be properly trained so that in case of any problem they can handle the same with ease.
These are mainly the points and issues which are covered in the SMSTS course. The SMSTS course content might vary slightly from one university to another, but the basics remain the same.

Safety and security at the workplace are of prime importance and the organisations should give emphasis and importance to it. From this perspective, the SMSTS course becomes of paramount importance. Safety is a style of working and working 100% safe is the aim of the organisations. Even a single accident can put a big dent on the reputation of the organisation besides compensation and insurance issues. The new employees should be given this training before deploying them to the project site. A person coming from the college or university will not be equipped with the safety skills and in his enthusiasm can do a blunder at the workplace and in that light, this type of courses are very crucial.

I personally believe that safety should be a way of our working and we must observe the safety rules and regulations without any apprehension for the delay or slow movement of a project. There is no point in crying over the spilled milk.
