Advantages of Adopting New Learning Methods in Schools

Technology making our world interesting. Implementation of some effective strategies in learning has a lot of benefits. This article explains the advantages of adopting new learning methods in education.

There has been a significant shift in the approach to education, especially in recent years. A substantial number of schools around have adopted modern methods of learning, to deliver education, as opposed to the use of conventional teaching techniques. Hitherto, learning focused on mere cramming of lessons, there were no real methodologies involved, other than listening, reading, repeating and memorizing. Teachers set the pace for learning, and students kept pace with them. There was no real involvement of the student, in the learning process – it centered more on their ability to memorize rather than understand.

Slow learners were at a disadvantage here, because clearly, the system catered to those students who could cope with the pace of learning set by the teacher.

Conversely, modern methods of learning, follow a systematic approach. The new learning methods include interactive approaches, supported largely by technology to make learning interesting and effective. Modern learning methods center around the students. They are more about learning than teaching. It is a more activity-based method of learning.

The focus is on finding answers to problems, instead of cramming well-scripted answers. So, there is more reasoning involved.

Technology and learning

Nowadays many schools are adopting new methods of learning in order to enhance students learning. For example, even in Kerala, some of the best schools in Thrissur, Kochi, Trivandrum etc have chosen to promote modern methods of learning. They have brought in changes to the curriculum to make it suit a revolutionary and productive technique for imparting education.
Many schools have introduced digital classrooms and tab-based learning, as part of this initiative. There is a shift from textbooks to a mode of interactive learning, that makes use of technology. The technology-based method of learning is more student-oriented and provides them with a better learning platform. Students are more involved; hence they are better able to absorb the lessons.

Teaching redefined

The role of the teacher takes a new definition when modern methods of learning are applied in the classroom. The teachers' role stops being limited to what they can teach. In an interactive environment, the students actively partake in what they learn.

Learning and teaching, in conventional classrooms, are carried out passively. Teachers teach and students listen, take notes and memorize stuff. However, modern methods of learning use interactive devices, that call for better participation from the learners. Lessons are no longer limited to lectures, blackboard and textbooks, and notebooks. Lessons are fun and engaging since different tools are used, to rouse the interest in the learners.

Structured lessons

Technology in the classrooms allows teachers to organize and compose lessons in advance. Additionally, teachers can schedule activities relevant to specific lessons. These get the attention of the entire class since there is more use of graphics and images instead of mere printed text. The interactive tools enhance learning because it promotes active participation by the learner – they watch, listen, get involved, participate in learning activities, ask questions, find solutions. Interactive teaching methods stimulate the brain and enable learning.

Stimulate and engage

Studies reveal that interactive technology, used in modern classrooms increases enthusiasm and engagement levels in the learners. Lessons stop being boring because interactive tools infuse a fun element into them – quizzes, puzzles, and other fun activities. Students learn through these activities - this play-way method of teaching augments learning. The new teaching methods change the position of the learner from being passive to an active participant in the learning process.

Audio-video teaching aids

Dull and the drab lectures are removed from the classroom and replaced by interactive teaching methods. These methods have proven to be helpful with students with slow learners or those with learning disabilities.

Students learn better when audio-visual aids are used for lessons. Not every child is a good listener. Not every child has the ability to grasp lessons taught via conventional methods, which are mostly theoretical. However, the brain becomes more receptive to learning and remembering new concepts when the lessons are hands-on, involving active participation that includes experiments and solution finding tasks. Such teaching techniques allow the brain to create neural pathways that enable quick processing of information.

On the one hand, modern methods equip teachers with the right teaching aids, that help them deliver education more effectively. On the other hand, these learning methods improve proficiency in students; making them better at learning and remembering concepts. The new methods of learning develop critical thinking and analytical skills, which is missing in learning through rote.

Another notable observation is that students do not feel undue stress or pressure with modern methods of learning.

Use of technology and audio-visual aids is definitely helpful in better teaching approach. Teaching is an activity where monotony is to be broken from time to time and the students should interact voluntarily otherwise it will be a one-sided affair and will not serve the purpose. Many institutions are now adopting these methods to attract students to their premises.
