How to get a valid commercial pilot license in India through IGRUA 2019 course

Let your dream to be a commercial pilot take concrete wing through a course at Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi (IGRUA), which has issued the admission notification for the 2019 Ab-initio to Commercial Pilot License (CPL) course. There will be three batches, the first starting in August this year. Candidates should note that there is also a provision to pursue a three-year course to acquire a B.Sc. (Aviation) Degree, which will be conducted simultaneously with the CPL Course, subject to the full completion of the required subjects of aviation as well as flying hours and given project work. This Degree course is to be taken at the Chatrapati Sahu Ji Maharaj University in Kanpur.

IGRUA Overview

Both Indians and international aspirants are accepted for admissions for pilot training at IGRUA, which is under the aegis of the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), Government of India. Single engine and multi-engine aircraft are used for training under the guidance of qualified faculty who have the flying experience, with safety given top priority. The requisite air space is available for training in the air, supported by on-ground training facilities and up to date navigational aids. The campus boasts of facilities for sports and comfortable residential hostel accommodation with meals for both boys and girls.

IGRUA CPL course highlights

The IGRUA CPL course encompasses 24 months, with a possible extension if required. The number of seats available has been increased to 100. 40 of these seats are for general candidates, 15 for SC candidates, eight for ST candidates, 27 for OBC candidates and 10 for EWS candidates. The IGRUA CPL course enables you to take up careers as pilots with national and international airlines. On-campus placement interviews with national carriers are scheduled from time to time.

Who can apply

Those applying for admission to the IGRUA CPL course must fulfill all of the following eligibility requirements –

Age criteria

You must have completed a minimum of 17 years of age at the time of joining the IGRUA course.

Education qualifications

  • For general candidates: You must have passed in the subjects of English, Mathematics and Physics at the 10+2 level with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks in the subjects of Mathematics and Physics.
  • For SC/ST/OBC candidates: You must have passed in the subjects of English, Mathematics and Physics at the 10+2 level with a minimum 50% aggregate marks in the subjects of Mathematics and Physics. In case candidates do not qualify after 5% relaxation in the entrance test, the seats would be de-reserved for General Category candidates.

Note: If you are appearing in the qualifying examination in 2019, you are provisionally eligible to apply and will get admission to the course subject to fulfilling the requisite eligibility criteria.

Medical fitness

You will need to submit a Class-I medical fitness certificate as proof of your fitness. You may join initially with a Class-II medical fitness certificate but will later need to clear and submit a Class-I medical fitness certificate. IGRUA CPL course fees

You can avail of financial assistance and make enquiries on the same at the page about IGRUA financial assistance provisions before applying for the course. It is also a good idea to check with banks for education loans for pilot training courses.

The list of fees is as follows -
  1. Application fee: General category candidates, OBC and EWS candidates have to pay an application fee of Rs. 10,000/- (non-refundable). SC and ST candidates do not have to pay any application fee. This fee can be paid via internet banking, debit or credit cards or through a Bank Challan in any branch of State Bank of India as per the requisite instructions for the fee deposit.

  2. Training fee: The training fee for this course is Rs. 42 lakhs and is applicable to all the categories of candidates.

  3. Additional expenses: There will be additional expenses (same for all categories of candidates) of approximately Rs. 2 lakh which will cover the cost of study material, the uniform, navigation computer, headphones, exam fee, etc.

  4. Accommodation: For campus accommodation, the boarding and lodging fee would be Rs. 12,000/- approximately per month. This includes both, mess and separate hostel accommodation for boys and girls on a twin-sharing basis within the campus.

  5. Commitment money: If you are selected at the final selection stage (refer to the details of the selection process which are mentioned later in this article), then you will need to pay commitment money of Rs. 2lakhs by 5th August 2019 to secure your seat for the course. Note that this amount is a non-refundable amount, but it will be adjusted against the total fee of the course.

How to apply

You need to register and apply for the online written test, which will be conducted at specific centres on 1st June 2019 at the official IGRUA entrance test portal.. Ensure that you have a valid Email ID and a valid mobile number. You will also require to upload a scanned copy of your recent passport size photograph in JPG/JPEG format only (file size 80KB maximum) and a scanned signature (file size 80KB maximum).

You can download your Admit Card on or after 22nd May 2019. The admit card will provide the schedule of the interview and aptitude test and will be valid only if you are shortlisted in the written test.

Entrance test

The written entrance test is an online one which will be conducted at various centres (refer to the list of centres at the official website). You can opt for three centers, giving your preference for the first, second and third centres. The entrance test covers (i) General English; (ii) Mathematics; (iii) Physics; and (iv) Reasoning and Current Affairs. The questions are based on the 10+2 level syllabus and are objective type, with no negative marks for incorrect answers. The cutoff marks for SC/ST/EWS/OBC candidates will be 5% less from the cut-off marks obtained by the last candidate in the General category.

Selection process

Based on the scores in the written test, candidates will be shortlisted for the interview/Viva, starting from 8th July 2019. For this, you will need to bring along the below-mentioned documents in original along with one photocopy of each document.
  1. Proof of date of birth (such as 10th Class certificate).

  2. Your Class 10 mark sheet.

  3. Your 10+2 mark sheet.

  4. Caste Certificate if you are an SC/ST/OBC category candidate.

  5. If applicable, a certificate from the Competent Authority that as an OBC category candidate you do not belong to Creamy layer.

  6. If applicable, a Certificate from an Officer (not below the rank of Tehsildar) that you come within the EWS category.

  7. The Admit Card which you had downloaded for the written test

Once you clear the interview/Viva, you must clear the Pilot Aptitude Test/ Psychometric Test. Only successful candidates in these tests would be eligible for final selection. Candidates who are applying in the SC/ST category will get reimbursement only once for Second Class to and fro rail fare on the production of tickets, from their registered address to Raebareli to appear for the Interview/Pilot Aptitude Test.

  6. Interview/ Viva & Pilot Aptitude Test starts from: 8th July 2019.

  7. Final Result of written test on IGRUA website/via email/SMS: 20th July 2019.

  8. Last Date for payment of Commitment Money: 5th August 2019.

  9. Date of Joining First Batch: 21st September 2019.
