2019 Indo-US WISTEMM Student Internships and Fellowships for Women online applications


Eager to take up a student internship program in the USA? Looking for government fellowship schemes for women to fund research in America? This article provides complete information on two wonderful opportunities for women offered by the Government of India and Indo-U.S. Science & Technology Forum, namely the Women Overseas Student Internship program and the Women Overseas Fellowship program. Details of eligibility requirements for each, grant amount, etc are provided.

Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India and Indo-U.S. Science & Technology Forum (IUSSTF) have announced applications open for the Indo-U.S. Fellowship for Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (WISTEMM). There are two modules of the program which provide women research opportunities in premier institutions in the U.S.A., one the Women Overseas Student Internship program, and the other the Women Overseas Fellowship program. The fields of work are diverse, including Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Cognitive Sciences, Engineering and Technology, etc. Both the programs are open only to Indian women applicants. The submission deadline for both the programs is 17th June 2019. Note that those who have availed any other overseas fellowship for a period of more than three months through any Government/public funding agency during the last five years will not be considered for this fellowship. Accordingly, an undertaking to this effect must be submitted at the time of application. Further, you need to correspond with the proposed host institute in the U.S.A. for your visit.

Women Overseas Student Internship program

This is of three to six months' duration. The grant (based on the prevailing foreign exchange rate) will be disbursed directly through the parent institution in India. In order to facilitate the advance grant transfer, you will be required to provide the Banking Details of your Parent Organization in the prescribed format which will be given prior to the disbursement of the fund. The funding support includes –
  1. A monthly stipend of $2,500.

  2. Air fare expenses up to $ 2,500. This is for travel in economy class on the shortest route from your place of work in India to the host institute in U.S.A. and back. The tickets will be provided directly by the IUSSTF Travel Desk.

  3. Health Insurance of up to $500. The insurance plan must meet the minimum insurance coverage requirements of the U.S. host University. In case the insurance budget exceeds the amount, the additional amount will have to be borne by you.

  4. Contingency expenses up to $1,000. This amount is for expenses for field trips, U.S. visa, airport transfers in India and U.S.A., etc. You will be required to provide supporting receipts and vouchers for expenses at the time of settlement of the award grant.

Visa details

Arrangements for your US visa must be made by you. You have to apply for a J1 visa. You can use the IUSSTF WISTEMM award letter as a supporting document for your application for the J1 visa along with other requisite documents from the host institution, which includes the DS- 2019 form and an invite letter.



Who can apply

These are the eligibility requirements to apply for the Women Overseas Student Internship program-

Academic Qualification

You should currently be pursuing a full-time Ph.D. degree in Basic Sciences, Engineering or Technology, including Agricultural and Medical Sciences. The institutions where you are pursuing the Ph.D. should be at a recognized academic institution or an R&D institute or a University in India. Further, you will need to provide a No Objection Certificate (NoC) in the prescribed format from your current employer, indicating that during this period, the continuity of employment on the post presently held by you would continue to be applicable.

Note that if you are in the first year of the Ph.D. degree program or have submitted your thesis/likely to submit the thesis within the next three months from the closing date of online submission, then you are ineligible to apply for the program.

Age criteria

You should be in the age group of 21 to 35 years as on 17th June 2019.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online by 17th June 2019 at the official Indo-US Science and Technology Forum website .

List of documents

Ensure that you submit the following documents with your application –
  1. Two recommendation letters from Referees (these could be a Faculty, the Head of the Department, a senior scientist, the Ph.D. Supervisor, etc.)

  2. The Acceptance Letter/Certificate from the host institute in the U.S.A. in the prescribed format (format available at the IUSSTF website). The letter should include the merits/uniqueness of the host institute in the proposed area of research.

  3. A No-Objection Certificate from the parent institution in the prescribed format.

  4. C.V. of the U.S. Host/Mentor along with a list of the best publications in the proposed area of work.

  5. The latest marks sheet/ Ph.D. transcripts.

  6. Your C.V. of not more than four pages, with a current photo.

  7. Proof of research work done by you in nationally or internationally recognized academic journals, if any, uploading two of the best publications.

  8. Proof of Date of Birth, such as birth certificate/Class 10 certificate/Passport copy, which should be scanned and uploaded.

Selection process

A Selection Committee will go through the applications and research proposals and make recommendations on the basis of various aspects, including the applicant's credentials in terms of academic background, credentials of host mentor & host institute, research output in terms of publication, etc. The top ten candidates would be selected.

After selection

Once you are selected, you must commence your travel within four months from the date of the Award announcement. A waiver request will not be accepted unless it is an exceptional case, such as delay in the processing of J1 U.S. visa due to some valid administrative reasons.

On completing the internship, within eight weeks you must submit a detailed Internship Completion Report to IUSSTF along with other requisite documents in the prescribed format towards the settlement of the award grant. You will also be required to submit acceptance as stated under the terms and conditions that, in case, you do not come back or discontinue the fellowship in the middle, then the entire amount will be treated as a loan and you will have to repay the amount back to the grantee.

Women Overseas Fellowship program

This program is of a duration of three to six months. Those having a Ph.D. or D.Sc. from a foreign country or are working on any kind of Fellowship cannot apply for this program. Also, those with exposure to overseas research of more than three months in the last five years from the last date of submission are not eligible to apply.

Like for the internship program, you need to give the requisite bank details of your parent 0organization in the prescribed format. The funding support includes –
  1. A monthly stipend of $3,000.

  2. Air fare expenses up to $ 2,500. This is for travel in economy class on the shortest route from your place of work in India to the host institute in U.S.A. and back. The tickets will be provided directly by the IUSSTF Travel Desk.

  5. Conference allowances of up to $ 1,200. For availing this allowance, you will be required to get formal prior approval from the U.S. host Mentor and IUSSTF to attend conferences or visit other institutes of interest within U.S.A.

Age criteria

You should be in the age group of 27 years to 45 years as on 17th June 2019.

  2. Acceptance Letter/Certificate from the host institute in the United States, as per the format indicated (refer to details for the student internship program).

  3. Statement from your current employer in the prescribed format.

  4. A scanned copy of Ph.D. degree certificate (the Ph.D. should be completed).

  5. C.V. of the U.S. Host/Mentor along with a list of best publications in the proposed area of work.

  6. Proof of Research work published by you in nationally or internationally recognized academic journals (you should upload two best publications in PDF format).

  7. Your C.V. of not more than four pages, with a current photo.

  8. Proof of Date of Birth (refer to details for the student internship program).




Selection and after

Like for that program, within eight months of completion of the Fellowship, you must submit a detailed Fellowship Completion Report to IUSSTF along with other requisite documents in the prescribed format towards the settlement of the award grant. Other details are the same as for the student internship program.

The last date to submit applications for both programs: 17th June 2019.
