So it is better to take time and decide the stream at leisure than to panic in haste.

Streams available after class X

First of all, you as a student would have to decide among the three available streams -

Science

Science is the stream chosen by many in the country. It provides a vast range of subjects and opportunities. It is this stream that is needed for popular careers like medicine and engineering. The science subjects include mathematics, biology, physics, chemistry, computer science, IT, electronics, etc. The students also have the options to choose their electives such as economics and psychology from the Commerce and the Humanities stream. The plus point in the stream is that one might opt for the other streams after completing class 12th if he or she finds it difficult to pursue the stream further. So, one does have the option to change the stream if one realizes later that the chosen stream is a mistake for him.

Commerce

The commerce stream is generally regarded as the money making stream. It generates interest in careers like investment banking, chartered accountancy, company secretaryship, accounts and finance. The core subjects in the stream are accountancy, economics, business law, audit and taxation, and marketing. Electives from Humanities can be chosen while studying commerce. Commerce with mathematics happens to be the most popular combination among career-oriented students.

Humanities

Arts and Humanities have become quite popular among the young generation as it gives options for many exciting and adventurous career opportunities like mass communication and journalism, social work, teaching, film making, writing, etc. subjects like economics, sociology, psychology, political science, and history are taken up in the stream.

It is obvious that the student might get confused over the streams if his research on the subjects and the institutions are not satisfying. Hence, he needs to consider many things while making up his mind to take up any particular stream once he completes the 10th class.

Tips while deciding the stream

  1. Understand yourself first: It is very essential that you know your interests and qualities first. You may be good in one stream and may not be too good in some other. Else, you may also be good in some subjects. So you need to sit back and think on topic, subjects or career that excites you the most. You should not regret the decision once you take it and should be able to enjoy it throughout.

  2. Analyze your strengths and skills: Deciding a stream merely on the basis of interest might be dangerous. You also need to analyze your skills for the subject as well. For example, you might be interested in arithmetical mathematics. But taking up PCM after 10th would not help you as the mathematics at that level would definitely be the advanced one. So it is better to check your skills and strengths while choosing the stream.

  3. Do a research on the streams: This is obvious. You cannot choose a stream without going through the brochures. But a little more effort on this would clear out any false ideas that you might own. Do the research on the streams. Study out the subjects and the electives that are available to you.

  4. Consider the Board: You need to decide not only for the stream but also on the Board of Examinations. You have to decide among CBSE, ICSE or the state board. It would be difficult for you to get adjusted in the initial days when you shift from the board to which you were used to till the 10th class.

  5. Do not underestimate the educational counseling: Many a time, we tend to neglect the counseling provided by the institutions. The counseling provided by them is based on the available subjects and electives that you are eligible for. So it is better to take up the counseling. Further, also interact with the students who are already pursuing the course you want to take up to have a better understanding of the subjects.

  6. Check the career prospects: Check out the opportunities, scope and career prospects with respect to the stream you wish to take up. Your passion and interests should match the career available with the stream. But also ensure that the demand for the said prospect does not reduce down in the future.

  7. Place yourself in the job environment: Take advantage of the field trips. Go and feel yourself in the work environment that you want for yourself. Let's say, you aim to be an architect. Then you need to go out and see how to accommodate to the architect's life. Go to a work site and spend a few hours over there and see if the work interests you. The career may seem to be nice when you are at a distance and may not be the same when you are actually in that environment.

So consider all the options available before you jump into deciding your stream for the next two years.
