Overview Established in 1936 by Rukmini Devi Arundale, Kalakshetra Foundation's Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts (RDCFA) is an autonomous body under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The institute has issued the admissions' notification for its three Postgraduate Diploma programs, namely Dance, Music, and Visual Arts. Both national and international students can submit their online applications by 31st May 2019.
Note that Kalakshetra wishes to give admission to only those who are keen on becoming professional artists and who will give priority to practicing their art. Scholarships are available for students from low-income families, those who are residents of the North Eastern States of India and those applying through the cultural exchange program of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Govt. of India. Diploma in DanceThis is a four-year full-time program in Bharatanatyam. Adavus and abhinaya, yoga and exercises, all form part of the curriculum.
Diploma in Vocal and Instrumental Carnatic Music This is a four-year program which includes three hours of music class on a daily basis and yoga as well. Ragas and Kirtis, as well as musical compositions by renowned Gurus, are part of the learning modules. Developing the voice and working on the speed of notes also forms a crucial part of the course. Those taking up vocal music are required to also take up an instrument as a subsidiary subject in addition to the theory of music, the study of the lives of great musicians, and shastras related to music. Field trips are organized to places which are the centers of Carnatic music, such as Thiruvaiyaru. You must also learn two out of three languages as part of the curriculum. The options are Sanskrit, Telegu, and Tamizh.
For the instrumental course, you can choose any one between the veena, the violin, the mridangam and the flute as your main subject. Vocal music will then be your subsidiary subject. Other aspects of the curriculum are the same as for those studying vocal music.
Diploma in Visual Arts This is a four-year program of eight semesters. Other than academic studies, sculpture and Indian Art (drawing and painting) are the main subjects. Ancillary subjects include ceramics, graphics (printmaking), and creative design and computer photography. Art History is one of the other aspects, covering both Indian and Western forms.
Eligibility requirements For admission to any of the programs, you should be between the ages of 17 and 25 years. The age restriction may be relaxed/waived in the case of foreign applicants as determined by the selection committee and the final decision of the college Director. Academically, you should have passed Class 12 for admission to the programs.
How to apply You can download the prospectus from the official website or obtain it from the college office before filling in the online application form for admissions. International students and NRIs have to submit the Foreign Students application form with a self-introduction stating the reason for their wish to learn Bharatnatyam in Kalakshetra. They should also submit a DVD of their music/dance/art experience latest by 31st May 2019. Visa and passport details must be produced at the time of application. However, those selected will be given a provisional admission letter via e-mail so that they can obtain the requisite student Visa. Instructions for international students should be checked at the official college website.

Selection process Shortlisted candidates will be called for the mandatory interview with the date and location intimated to them in the interview letter. The interviews are generally scheduled in the second week of June. There will also be a practical aptitude test.
After the selection The courses will begin at Kalakshetra Foundation's Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts in the second week of June. If you are selected, you must be ready to join within one week. International students are permitted to start the course only after obtaining the appropriate student visa. The first year of each program is a probationary one and you must complete the entire course in four years in order to get the Diploma certificate. By chance you fail in the main subject during the second or the third year, you may be required to redo the year again so that you achieve perfection in the main subject. In case you fail in any other subject other than the main subject, then you can take the same in the next year of study as an arrear exam paper.
