What's special about studying in a JNV institute

A Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (known as JNVs) is a co-ed residential institute with hostel accommodation for boys and girls. Managed by NVS, there are JNVs in all States of India except in Tamil Nadu. Students who are enrolled in a JNV pursue the curriculum of the CBSE Board.

The JNV is especially a boon to those studying in rural areas. The biggest plus point is that students who get admission do not have to pay any fees because all expenses are covered, including hostel fees, books, uniforms and so on. Only students enrolled in Class 11 and 12 will be required to pay a negligible monthly fee, but those who are from SC/ST category, as well as girls and students from BPL (Below Poverty Line) families, do not have to pay this fee. A fee of Rs.1500/- per month has to be paid by students who are wards of Govt. employees who are eligible for children education allowance.

Other than academic studies and learning computer skills, JNV students enjoy sports and other co-curricular activities such as Scouts & Guides, NCC, NSS, etc. Through the special migration scheme, students of a JNV get the opportunity to learn about the culture of other States by studying for a year in another JNV in a different linguistic region.

The success of the JNV educational system can be seen in the academic results. As per the latest data issued by NVS, 38% of students qualified for the JEE-Main-2019 and six students from the underprivileged class got international admission after Class XII. In sports, too, some of the students have excelled. For example, L.V. Jenin Lamkang, a student of JNV Thaubai in Manipur won a Gold medal in the U-14 category of Judo at the 2018-2019 School Games Federation of India (SGFI).

Eligibility requirements for admission to JNV Class XI

Educational qualification

You should have studied in and passed Class X during the academic session 2018-2019 from a Govt./Govt.-recognized school which is affiliated to CBSE or any other State Education/other recognized Board in the same District/State where the JNV to which admission is sought is located.

Age criteria

You should be born between 1st June 2001 and 31st May 2005 (both days inclusive). This criterion is required for all categories of candidates, including those who belong to the categories of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

Selection criteria

Those who fulfill the above-mentioned eligibility criteria will then be considered for admission against available vacancies in Class XI on the basis of marks secured in the Class X Board Exam during academic session 2018-19. Accordingly, for each District, NVS will draw up a merit list for selection of students against the vacancies under various categories. Subsequently, a common merit list will be prepared at the State level. If there are further vacancies in other JNVs of the same State, then these will be filled from the State level merit list by considering the option exercised by the candidates.

The list of selected students will be displayed on the Notice Board of all the JNVs and also at the website of each JNV. Selected candidates will also be intimated by post by the Principal of the concerned JNV. In case the selected candidate does not join the JNV, then the vacant seats will be filled only from the State level merit list. Additional weightage of marks will be given for NCC, Scouts & Guides and Sports & Games for Science and Commerce streams.

Those who get admission will be required to undergo a medical check-up by the JNV-appointed Doctor. Students suffering from infectious disease/serious ailments will not be given admission.

At the time of admission to the JNV, you may be required for the purpose of verification to produce all the relevant documents in original, such as your Class X mark sheet, SC/ST certificate (if applicable), other certificates (such as NSS), etc. Those who get admission will participate in an orientation program for the duration of 10 days to help them to adapt them to the environment at the JNV institute.
