How to apply for for Govt. KVPY Fellowship 2019 for Basic Science courses

The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India invites applications from eligible students who are keen on pursuing a research career in science for the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) Fellowships 2018.

About the Fellowship

The Fellowship program is managed by the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, with committees to oversee the various aspects of the Fellowship program. The Basic Sciences' courses for which the Fellowship is applicable are as follows -
  1. B.Sc.

  7. Physics

  8. Mathematics

  9. Statistics

  10. Biochemistry

Those who are enrolled in the Fellowship program can avail of the facilities at renowned National Laboratories/Universities in India, including lab and library facilities. For this, awardees receive an ID card. Also, Fellows are eligible to receive the KVPY fellowship up to the pre-Ph.D. level or five years, whichever is earlier. However, those who have received any other fellowship or scholarship will be required to relinquish it if they wish to avail of this KVPY Fellowship.



Fellowship amount

  1. For Streams SA/SX/SB: The monthly fellowship is Rs.5,000/- and the annual contingency grant is Rs.20,000/- during the first to third years of B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Integrated M.Sc./M.S.

  2. For Streams SA/SX/SB: The monthly fellowship is Rs.7,000/- and the annual contingency grant is Rs.28,000/- during the M. Sc. / fourth to fifth years of Integrated M.Sc. /M.S./M.Math./M.Stat.

It is important to now that in case a Fellow opts out of the basic science stream at any stage, then he/she you will forfeit the Fellowship and Contingency Grant.

There is provision for a renewal of the Fellowship on certain conditions. Firstly, the Fellow must continue to have a good academic record with a first class or 60% marks in aggregate (50% for SC/ST/PWD students) or equivalent grade points. It is also required to pass all the subjects prescribed for that particular academic year and score the required percentage of marks. Secondly, the Fellow is expected to participate have a satisfactory performance in the summer camp in the first year and a summer project every year thereafter.

Who can apply

The KVPY Fellowships are open to Indian nationals. Those who are planning to study or are already studying an undergraduate program through Distance Education mode/correspondence course of any university cannot apply for this Fellowship.

The eligibility requirements for the three streams are as follows -

For Stream SA

You should be enrolled in Class XI with science subjects during the academic year 2019-2020. You should be keen on pursuing an undergraduate program in Basic Sciences, such as B.Sc., B.S., B.Stat., B.Math, Int. M.Sc. or Int. M.S. during the academic year 2021-2022.

The fellowship will be effective once you join an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences for the academic year 2021-2021 after having obtained a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate in Science subjects in the Class XII Board exam (50% for SC/ST/PWD students). During the interim period of one year, you will be attending the National Science (Vijyoshi) Camp, for which travel expenses and local hospitality will be met by KVPY.

For Stream SX

You should be enrolled in +2/XII standard with science subjects during the academic year 2019-2020. You should be keen on pursuing an undergraduate program in Basic Sciences, such as B.Sc., B.S., B.Stat., B.Math, Int. M.Sc. or Int. M.S. during the academic year 2021-2021.

You should have obtained a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate in maths and science subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the Class X Board Exam (65% for SC/ST/PWD) and a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate in maths and science subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the Class XII Board Exam (50% for SC/ST/PWD).

The fellowship will be effective only on joining an undergraduate course in Basic science in the academic year 2020-21 after getting a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Maths and Science subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the Class XII Board exam during the academic year 2019-20.

If you are a student in the second year of study in the Cambridge International Examination Board and aspiring to join an undergraduate program in Basic Sciences namely Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology in the Academic year 2019-2020, then you are eligible to apply provided you have secured a minimum of 75% (65% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in maths and science subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the Class X Board Exam.

For Stream SB

You should be enrolled in the First Year of a program in Basic Sciences, such as B.Sc., B.S., B.Stat., B.Math, Int. M.Sc. or Int. M.S. during the academic year 2019-2020.

You should have scored a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in maths and science subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the Class XII Board Exam. In the first year final examination of B.Sc./B.S./B.Math./B.Stat./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S. you must have scored at least 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks before taking up the fellowship.

Note: There are more Fellowships available exclusively for students of the SC/ST community and some for students under the category of Persons With Disability (both, physically and visually challenged).



How the selection is done

After checking out the application forms, those who meet the basic eligibility requirements as stated above are required to appear for a computer-based Aptitude Test at centers in various parts of the country. The test will be conducted both in Hindi and English on 3rd November 2019 (Sunday). The Admit Card to appear for the test can be downloaded from the official website in the second week of October 2019.

About the test: The test is based on the syllabus up to class X/XII/first year of the Basic Science courses and you can practice on a mock aptitude test which will be provided later at the KVPY website.

For the test:
In addition to the Admit card, you must bring a valid School/College ID or Aadhar Card or Passport with a clear photograph. Without the Admit Card and valid ID, you will not be allowed to appear for the aptitude test. You should be present at the exam center at least one hour before the test begins. Virtual calculators will be available on the computer screen and sheets of paper for rough work.

The exam time is as follows –
(i) For Stream SA: 9.30a.m. to 12.30noon. Reporting time is 8.30a.m.
(ii) For Stream SB/SX: 2p.m. to 5p.m. Reporting time is 1 p.m.
Note: Ensure you reach the centre one hour before the test. Gadgets like calculators, mobile phones, Ipods, pen drives, etc will not be allowed inside. You will be provided with paper for rough work, so do not carry any blank sheets of paper inside.

How to apply

Applications for the Fellowship will be accepted online only at the KVPY application website. It is advisable to confirm from the official website the requisite documents needed for uploading during the online application procedure.

Important Dates

At the time of posting this article, only the test date has been released, namely 3rd November 2019. The opening and closing dates of applications will be released later, in the first week of July 2019.
