About CIAB


Center of Innovative and Applied Bioprocessing, Mohali is a national institute under the department of biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. It is the only institute in India which works on secondary agriculture and development of products from bioresources. It is a recognized regional center of Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB) to provide Ph.D. degree.

Admissions 2019


Center of Innovative and Applied Bioprocessing, Mohali has announced admissions 2019 into Ph.D. in Biotechnology course. This degree is awarded by RCB which is an institute of national importance created by the act of parliament. The total number of seats for this course is 5. The duration of this Ph.D. course is minimum 5 years and maximum of 7 years. Areas of research work are mentioned below:

  • Chemical Engineering
  • Chemical Sciences
  • Biological Sciences
  • Food Science and Engineering
This program provides advanced training and research on food nutrition and engineering, biotechnology and synthetic biology, chemical engineering, chemical bioproducts and utilization of agro-residues. This course mainly aims to develop a specialist in the field of the bioprocess. This program consists of 2 components - Ph.D. course work and research work which leads to submission of a doctoral thesis.

Eligibility criteria


Candidates have to fulfill the following minimum eligibility criteria to apply for Ph.D. in Biotechnology program at Center of Innovative and Applied Bioprocessing, Mohali:

  • Candidates must have secured minimum 60% marks (5% relaxation for SC/ST/OBC) in M.Sc./ M.E./ M.Tech./ M.S. (Pharm) or any other equivalent degree in any branch of Chemical Sciences/ Biological Sciences/ Chemical Engineering/ Food Science and Technology or related field.
  • Candidates must have qualified in any one of the national examinations mentioned below.
    • Preference will be given to the candidates with valid fellowship.
    • DST-INSPIRE (Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research)
    • ICMR-JRF (ICMR Junior Research Fellowship)
    • DBT-JRF (DBT Junior Research Fellowship)
    • Joint CSIR-UGC-NET test for JRF
    • Any other national level fellowship
    • GATE
    • ASRB-NET
    • Any other equivalent national level test
  • Age limit for the candidates is 28 years (As per GOI norms, relaxation will be given).
  • Candidates who will be appearing for the final year examination or those who are awaiting results can also apply.

Candidates have to send the filled in application form along with the Demand Draft of Rs. 500/- drawn in favor of "Cheif Executive Officer, CIAB", payable at Chandigarh or Mohali to the below address. The last date for the submission of application is 10th June 2019.

Selection procedure


Candidates will be shortlisted based on their performance in the qualifying degree and national examinations. Shortlisted candidates will be called for interview, which will be conducted on 9th July 2019. In the interview, they will test the candidate's science aptitude and their interest in a career in scientific research and development.
