University of Mumbai PG Theater Arts course 2019 admissions

The Academy of Theater Arts, which was set up in 2003 by the University of Mumbai, has announced admissions open for the Master of Theater Arts program for the academic session 2019-2020.

About the course

The Master of Theater Arts program is of two years' duration and is a full time integrated course with 40% theoretical studies and 60% practicals.

The curriculum includes:
  1. Dramatic Literature and Theatre History: This encompasses Eastern, Western and India drama forms.

  2. Stage Craft and Theatre Technique: This includes the designs and lighting of sets, music and costume design and makeup design as well.

  3. Acting: You will learn the finer nuances of voice modulations, body movements, martial arts, and traditional rope Mallakhamb, yoga, dance forms, etc.

  4. Production and participation in Departmental Productions.

  5. Play Writing.

  6. Theatre Management.

  7. Art Administration.

As you can see, the course will give you an in-depth insight into all aspects of theatre, including acting, direction, writing, staging plays, theatre criticism, etc. You will not just lean creative aspects, but also develop organizational, marketing and administrative skills in theatre arts. What's more, you will get the opportunity to analyze plays which you watch and have interesting interactive sessions with eminent theatre personalities through seminars and festivals.



Eligibility criteria

There are only two requirements to qualify for admission to the course in theater arts. Firstly, you must be a Graduate in any stream. Secondly, you must have some theatre experience. Those who are students or are practicing the Performing Arts, such as folk and traditional theatre, music or dance, etc will be given preference.

How to apply

The prospectus and application form for the theater arts course is available between 11a.m. to 5p.m. on payment of Rs.150/- at:

You need to attach four passport size recent photos and also attested copies of the relevant documents. You can download the online form from the official website. Online applications are also accepted. Application forms are also available at www.theatreartsdepartmentmu.com.

Important dates

Last date to submit the application form: 30th June 2019.

Entrance exam date: 8th, 9th and 10th July 2019.

At the University of Mumbai website, there is a link given that will lead you to the website of the Academy of Theatre Arts. Over there you will get the details in the prospectus, including the fees. In case you are unable to access it, I am putting the information on the fee structure here for your reference.

The total fee for the academic year 2019-2020 for Indian students is Rs.29,175. Students of various categories (SC, ST, etc) can apply for Govt. of India Scholarships for the course. The break-up of the annual fee is as follows-
1. The registration fee for the first year only: Rs.825/-.
2. Document verification and postal charges: Rs.100/-.
3. Admission processing fee for the first year only: Rs.200/-.
4. Identity card fee for the first year only: Rs.50/-
5. Deposit for the first year only: Rs.800/-
6. The tuition fee for each year: Rs.20,000/-.
7. Performance and festival fee for each year: Rs.3,000/-
8. Library fee for each year: Rs.1,200/-.
9. Practical fees for working on technical equipment, for each year: Rs.3,000/-
10. In addition to the above fees, there will be an exam fee of Rs.2000/- per year, and a form fee of Rs.60/-, to be paid separately.

For foreign students, the total tuition fee is INR1,00.000/-.
