Best Mumbai training institutes for UPSC and MPSC entrance exams coaching

Are you looking for reputed coaching centers for civil services in Mumbai? This article provides complete information on two well-known centers in Mumbai which provide coaching for preparations for UPSC and MPSC exams. One is the University of Mumbai's Academy for Administrative Careers (AAC) and the other is the State Institute for Administrative Careers (SIAC), established by the Govt. of Maharashtra. Details of their coaching modules, facilities, and application procedure have been provided as well.

Every year, lakhs of candidates appear for civil service exams, including for the Maharashtra Public Service (MPSC) and the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exams. Catering to these candidates' aspirations are coaching centers which focus on preparing them exclusively for these exams. Let's have a look at the two reputed ones which are based in Mumbai city.

AAC University of Mumbai

The University of Mumbai is the oldest university in Maharashtra and one of the three oldest in India, with affiliated colleges all over the State offering undergraduate and postgraduate programs in various disciplines. Six years ago, it set up a special Department, the Academy for Administrative Careers (AAC). The goal of this Academy is to create an awareness in students about what the Civil Services is all about and develop in them a keenness to pursue a career in that field. A big plus point of training with AAC is getting access to the superb Jawaharlal Nehru Central library of the University of Mumbai. In addition to subject-based books, journals, and periodicals, students can avail of internet facilities to access online materials for their studies.

Eligibility

The candidate should have a Degree in any stream from a recognized institute/University. Those appearing for the final exam of the degree program in the year of application can also apply.

Coaching modules

There are separate training sessions for preparing for the Prelims and for the Main exams for UPSC and MPSC civil service exams Students will attend regular classroom sessions, participate in group discussions and attend seminars. Eminent academicians are invited for guest lectures. Students also interact with faculty and get queries answered directly. In order to gauge whether or not the student has imbibed what has been taught, tests are scheduled from time to time. The scores of these tests then enable the faculty to understand the weak areas and mentor the student with suggestions on how improvements can be made in order to prepare well for the exams.

Application process

The application is to be done directly at AAC. Students wishing to apply for the coaching modules have to first pay the basic fee for the application form (generally Rs.500/-). AAC may conduct an entrance test for admission to the training center. The course fees are separate for training for Prelims and for training for the Mains. There is also a training fee if you wish to register for the guidance sessions on facing interview panels and learning how to answer commonly asked questions at job interviews on clearing the exams.

SIAC Mumbai

Established by the Government of Maharashtra in 1976, the State Institute for Administrative Careers (SIAC) in Mumbai provides free coaching for preparation for UPSC exams to both urban and rural students of the State who wish to join the civil services. There are generally over a hundred seats available, with ten reserved for minorities and ten seats for candidates from the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Research and Training Institute (BARTI), Pune (BARTI has its own reputed coaching programs - refer to the end of this article). Those who register are not allowed to pursue a job or take up an internship or pursue any other course during the duration of the SIAC coaching program.

Eligibility

Only a student who is a domicile of Maharashtra can register for the coaching program and one has to produce documentary proof of it at the time of applying. Also, one needs to be a Graduate from a recognized University. Those who are medical graduates and have completed their internship can also register. There is an age criterion, as well, which is considered as on the date of application.

Coaching program features

The duration of the coaching is 11 months. The first term is from January to August for coaching for the Civil Services Prelims and the second term is from September to December for coaching for the Civil Services Main Exam. This is followed by sessions on interview preparation techniques, these being usually scheduled in the months of March-April. The classroom sessions include coaching for General Studies and Aptitude Tests as well as all the optional subjects which are part of the Civil Services Prelims/Main exam. In the case of UPSC exam coaching being provided at a reputed coaching center in New Delhi, scholarships are available to cover the fees of the coaching. For this, a separate notification is released at the official website.

Students are expected to maintain 80% attendance and appear for the tests as scheduled. Regular students receive a stipend of Rs. 2000/- per month. While the coaching sessions are free, students have to pay a fee of Rs.500/- as caution money for use of the library. This fee is refundable. There is also a fee of Rs.100/- for hostel accommodation on the SIAC residential campus. This accommodation has limited availability and is given to boys and girls on a merit basis who are from outside Mumbai. Students have access to the gym, reading hall and computer room where internet facilities are available during specific hours.

Students are advised to check out the rules and regulations for using the library facilities, and hostel accommodation, as well as policies governing the receipt of the stipend.

Application process

SIAC issues admission notifications of their coaching program at their website and in leading newspapers. Students have to register online and pay the fee for the application form. An entrance test may be scheduled a couple of months later. This test of two hours is of 100 marks with two sections and a student needs to get at least 33% to qualify for admission to the coaching program. Details of the format of the entrance test are provided beforehand at the website.
