Sainik Schools are boys' residential schools which are affiliated to the CBSE Board with English as the medium of instruction. In the case of Sainik School Chhingchhip, both boys and girls can get admission.
The goal of a Sainik school is to prepare the students for enrollment in prestigious Officer-training institutes, such as the National Defence Academy (NDA), which is located at Khadakwasla in Pune, Maharashtra, the Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala, Kerala, etc. In fact, as per statistics of the Sainik Schools Society, 25% of cadets at the NDA are from Sainik schools and over 10,000 cadets have joined the Defence forces till date. It is a matter of great pride that four Chiefs of Army, Navy and Air Force have been alumni of Sainik schools. Other alumni have established themselves in other fields as well, including the Civil Services, the corporate sector, etc.
Each of the Sainiks Schools has very good infrastructure and facilities, though these vary from one school to another. For example, not all of the schools may have facilities for swimming or boating. There are spacious classrooms equipped with audio-visual learning aids, computer and science labs with up to date equipment, a library, etc. The residential hostel accommodation also has the requisite facilities, including a canteen which provides wholesome diet. Sports facilities are abundant for tennis, squash, football, etc. Some of the schools have horse riding facilities and secure facilities for training in shooting at the special shooting ranges. Adventure activities may also be scheduled from time to time. NCC training is a mandatory aspect of the co-curricular activities at a Sainik school. List of Sainik Schools
