Do you know that your washing machine can do a lot more than just clean your clothes? We list 10 things you might not have ever thought of that your washing can clean. Read on to know all the common household items you can clean in a washing machine

People usually throw in their clothes for a wash in the laundry machine. But your washing machine can do more than that. It has got the untapped potential that can save you both effort and time. Did you know how many unconventional items around you can be simply cleaned with a few taps on a washing machine?

  1. Backpacks
Open and unzip all the compartments before you place the backpack securely inside a mesh bag and toss it inside for washing. Post wash, hang to dry in sunlight.
  2. Small Toys
Plastic and stuffed toys can be regularly cleaned to ensure your kid can stay off the germs. Place the toys inside a mesh bag and turn on the delicate cycle from the settings. The sanitise setting available in some machines help get rid of accumulated bacteria and germs.
  3. Pet Beds
Begin by using a vacuum cleaner on the pet bed to extract any hair and dust off the surface. Use a mild detergent powder and then put it in the dryer in the machine for minimum of 15 minutes. You can later even air dry it completely before putting it to use.
  4. Sneakers
Set to the warm water setting when you put your sneakers in the machine for a wash. The machine wash will eliminate any traces of your last adventures with the sneakers!
  5. Mop heads
Ironical as it may sound, the item used for cleaning also does require cleaning. Washing a mop manually is not really fun or efficient. Just throw the mop head packed in a mesh bag inside the machine and set the water heat to 'sanitise'. Get ready to clean with a new mop head again!
  6. Rugs
As long as you don't use extreme temperature water to wash the bathroom mats and rugs you don't have to worry about them shrinking. Simply use warm water and set to a gentle cycle. Make sure the mats and rugs are well dried before use to prevent accidental slipping.
  7. Curtains
Curtain usually being the closest to the windows can attract dirt and dust sooner than you know and hence, require cleaning. Use warm water to machine wash curtains.
  8. Bed pillows
Bed pillows need to be cleaned to get rid of dead skin cells or dust mites from them. Add some fabric softener and use the 'sanitise' mode and adjust to small load setting. Post wash put it in the dryer.
  9. Lunch bags
Lunch bags can have liquid stains and food stains that will be hard to wash off with hands. Turn the lunch bags inside out and gently wash them in the warm water wash cycle.
  10. Baseball Hats
Baseball caps can be washed with cold water on a delicate cycle setting to get rid of any dust. Post wash, let it air dry.

A very useful article giving tips for washing specific household items in a washing machine. We are generally washing the clothes in a washing machine but it is much versatile in its use as detailed in the article.

I will like to mention that whether we wash the items mentioned in the article or simple clothes, there are certain things which can be observed in order to get good results as well as save detergent and water. Many people use the washing machine in same settings every time and do not adjust it for the type of cleaning required. That results in waste of water as well as detergents in many cases. If we use the washing machine as per the items to be washed then it will not only do a good job but it will be saving of resources also. For example, if there are a few clothes only then we must select the low water level and less detergent in the detergent box. In such cases using more detergent by mistake will simply make it stick to the clothes and give a shabby look. Sometimes the clothes are not dirty but simply wet with sweat or just wrinkled with wearing. In such cases, we can use the machine in quick mode or short time cycle and get good results in less time. If there are many clothes then it makes sense to wash the light coloured ones together and the darker ones in the next lot. Never use the machine with too many clothes or items in it. Leave sufficient space for churning of the items freely otherwise they will not get cleaned properly. The last point I will like to mention is not to wash less dirty clothes with dirtier ones, try to wash them in different cycles.
