KVPY 2020 Fellowship Program for Basic Sciences online applications open


Aiming for a career in basic sciences or research? KVPY or the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana was started in the year 1999 by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The main aim of establishing this fellowship program was to encourage students to take up basic sciences for their higher studies, with the ultimate aim of leading them to a career in research. Whoever, successfully qualifies the fellowship program is rewarded with handsome financial aid. However, they will have to pursue undergraduate courses in the field of basic sciences. Those who take up higher studies in engineering, medical or other professional courses cannot avail of this financial grant, even if they qualify for the fellowship.



KVPY fellowship program is a 2-stage process that includes a computer-based Aptitude Test and a Personal Interview. Students who are studying in class XI, XII or in the first year of their undergraduate studies in the basic sciences can appear for the test. Every year, the Aptitude Test gets conducted in November. But this year, due to the pandemic, things have got delayed and the Aptitude Test will be now conducted in January 2021. The updated details about the test, including the registration dates are given below. This year, there won't be any interview and the qualifiers will be decided solely on the basis of the aptitude test alone.

  • Online registration opens on - 06 September 2020

  • Last date for registration - 05 October 2020, 5:00 pm

  • Downloading of admit card - 2nd week of January

  • Date of aptitude test - 31 January 2021 (Sunday)

Different streams

  1. Stream SA
  2. Stream SX
  3. Stream SB

Eligibility


Stream SA:
Stream SA is applicable for students studying in class XI during the acdemic year 2020-21. They should have scored 75% or more marks in aggregate in their class X board exam with science and mathematics. In class XII also, the candidate will be required to score at least 60% marks in the science subjects. For SC, ST and PwD category candidates the minimum requirement for class X and XII marks is 65% and 50% respectively.

Stream SX:
This stream is applicable for students studying in class XII for the academic year 2020-21. The minimum marks required in class X and XII board exams is the same as that required for stream SA.

Stream SB:
This stream is for the students studying in the first year of their undergraduate studies like BSc, B.Math, BS. B.Stat and Integrated MSc. The minimum marks required is 60% in class XII board in science subjects. For SC, ST and PwD candidates, the required cut-off is 50%.

About the fellowship

The Department of Science and Technology's initiative with respect to this fellowship program has resulted in many talented students taking up a career in scientific research. The program is thus a big step in building a research-oriented culture in the country. Qualifying the fellowship exam rewards you with a handsome scholarship for the entire period of your study from undergraduate to postgraduate level. As on today, the fellowship amount is Rs 5,000 per month at the undergraduate level and Rs 7,000 at the postgraduate level. There is also a yearly contingency grant of Rs 20,000 per year at the undergraduate level and Rs 25,000 per year for postgraduate studies. Not just financial gains alone, the students are also benefited while seeking admissions to institutes like IISc Bangalore and the seven IISERs spread across the country. Based on their KVPY ranking, students can seek admission to these prestigious institutes that are renowned for their research-based courses in the field of basic sciences.



Courses eligible for fellowship

To avail this fellowship, the students should take up higher studies in the field of basic sciences only. The courses that are eligible for fellowship are – B.Sc., B.S., B.Stat., B.Math., integrated M.Sc and integrated MS. As mentioned earlier, those pursuing engineering, medicine, vocational or other professional courses are not eligible for the fellowship grant. They will be, however, considered as KVPY Scholar, irrespective of the discipline they take up for their undergraduate studies. Those pursuing higher education through distance or correspondence mode are also not eligible.

  12. Statistics and so on

Mode of selection

This year the selection for the fellowship program will be done purely on the basis of the Aptitude Test. As mentioned earlier, unlike in other years, there would not be an interview. For the Aptitude Test, students will have to appear for a computer-based test which is of multiple-choice or MCQ type. To qualify, the students will have to score marks above a certain cut-off. The cut-off will be category wise. As per the government norms on caste and category-based reservation, a certain percentage of fellowships will be reserved for the SC, ST and PwD category candidates. The entire selection procedure is administered by IISc.

Test centres

The aptitude test will be conducted in a number of cities and towns across the country. The candidates will get the choice of selecting four centres in the order of their preference. In any case, the candidates will be mostly getting the first choice as their test centre. The test centres are to be opted for at the time of filling the online application form.

Test medium

The test will be held only in two mediums, English and Hindi. Candidates can opt for any one of them during filling up of the form.

Continuation of fellowship

For the continuation of the fellowship in subsequent years, the students will have to continue with their studies in the same stream. They will also have to maintain a certain level of academic performance. For SC, ST and PwD candidates, the minimum requirement is 50% marks in aggregate, whereas for others it is 60%. The Head of the Institution, where the candidate is studying, will have to certify to this effect. The certification is to be done every year. In addition, the students will have to attend camps and summer projects during the summer vacation every year.



How to apply

The registration for the KVPY Test is to be done online by visiting the official website of . Before registering, go through the eligibility and other requirements for the test as given in the detailed advertisement. The application process is completely online. Before applying, the candidates will have to first register by providing their mobile number and email ID. A user ID and password will be generated that will be sent to the candidate's mobile and email. The candidate can then use them to log in and fill up the application form. The candidate will have to fill up details such as class X aggregate marks in math and science, stream that they are applying for and the test centre. They will also have to upload their recent passport photograph and signature in the JPEG format. For SC/ST and PwD candidates, they will have to upload their category and medical certificate respectively. Once the details have been filled correctly, submit the form and you will be taken to the online payment platform.

Application fee

  1. For SC/ST and PwD candidates - Rs 625
  2. For others - Rs 1250

The fee is to be paid online through credit card, debit card or net banking. To avail of the benefits, the physically disabled and SC/ST candidates will have to be in possession of their medical and caste certificates respectively and upload the same. The application fee once paid is not refundable.

A few important points about KVPY 2020

  • Other than Indian nationals, persons of Indian origin (PIO) and overseas citizens of India (OCI) too may apply for KVPY 2020.
  • To avail of the fellowship, the students will have to attend regular colleges for their undergraduate courses in basic sciences.
  • Considering that the pandemic is still razing on, KVPY reserves the right to postpone it to any other suitable date.
  • The candidates can also avail of a mock test that is available at the KVPY website.
