IBPS or the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection has always been instrumental in the recruitment of officers as well as clerical cadre staff in the banking sector. Through its recent recruitment notification, it has invited applications from fresh graduates for recruitment as Probationary Officers and Management Trainees. Around 4336 positions are available for recruitment in the financial year 2020-21. Any graduate may apply, irrespective of their branch or discipline, as long as their degree is from a recognized university in the country. The recruitment notification can be reached at the IBPS website at The 4336 vacancies that have been released are indicative. The actual requirement may vary depending upon the needs of the participating organizations, read banks. There are 17 banks in all, who are participating in this mega recruitment drive.

The Common Recruitment Process

The recruitment to the above 4336 posts is through a Common Recruitment Process (CRP) under which online examinations and an interview will be conducted to assess the suitability of the candidates. The online exam will be held in two stages, the Preliminary and the Main. Those qualifying the Preliminary will be able to sit for the online Main exam. Finally, those qualifying the Main exam will be called for the interview. The final selection of the candidates will be on the basis of their performance in the Main exam as well as the interview. The weightage of Main exam and interview is in the ratio of 80:20. Shortlisted candidates after the interview will be allotted to the participating public sector banks. The selected candidates will then undergo training at the respective banks.

IBPS - the organizer

The complete arrangements for conducting the 2-tier online exam is done by IBPS, whereas the interviews are conducted by the banks themselves with help from IBPS. The online exams will be held across the country at various centres. The list of the centres for both preliminary and main exam is given in the Annexure-II of the recruitment notification. The interview will be held at select centres only, which will be informed to the shortlisted candidates through call letters.

Exam schedule

The online preliminary exam is likely to be held on October 2019. The dates of the exam and schedule of the events are as follows.
  1. Online registration by candidates and payment of application fees – 07 Aug 2019 to 28 Aug 2019
  2. Pre-exam training – 23 Sep 2019 to 28 Sep 2019
  3. Download of call letters for pre-exam training – Sep 2019
  4. Download of call letters for online preliminary exam – Oct 2019
  5. Online preliminary exam – 12, 13, 19 and 20 Oct 2019
  6. Result of preliminary – Oct-Nov 2019
  7. Download of call letters for Online Main exam – Nov 2019
  8. Online Main exam – 30 Nov 2019
  9. Result Main – Dec 2019
  10. Download of call letters for interview – Jan 2020
  11. Interview – Jan-Feb 2020
  12. Provisional allotment to banks– Apr 2020

Eligibility criteria

  1. A graduation degree in any of the disciplines from a recognized university. Candidates to be in possession of mark sheet or degree certificate at the time of registering for this exam.
  2. Age of the candidate should not be less than 20 years. The maximum age limit for general candidates is 30 years. That means you should be born between 02 Aug 1989 to 01 Aug 1999 (both dates inclusive). For SC/ST candidates the age is relaxable by 5 years. For OBC candidates non-creamy layer, the relaxation in age is 3 years. Physically disabled candidates will get a relaxation of 10 years. Further, there is relaxation for ex-servicemen, J&K domiciled persons and those affected in the 1984 riots.
  3. The candidate should be an Indian citizen or a subject of Nepal, Bhutan or a Tibetan refugee who came to India prior to 01 Jan 1962.

Job reservations

Reservations to the above posts will be as per the Government of India guidelines on reservation for SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer) and physically disabled candidates. Additionally, there will be reserved posts for the EWS or the economically weaker section, as per recent guidelines of the GOI. To avail of their respective category reservations, the candidates should be in possession of valid documents.

Pre-exam training

Candidates from the SC, ST and the minority communities will be provided with pre-examination training at designated cities in the country. Interested and eligible candidates to select the option for pre-exam training during filling of the online application. Though the training will be provided free of cost, all other expenses including travel, lodging and food to be arranged by the candidates themselves. The list of such cities is available in the recruitment notice.

Exam pattern

  • Duration of the test – 1 hour
  • Total number of questions – 100
  • Total marks – 100
  • Subjects – English language, quantitative aptitude, Reasoning
Candidates need to qualify each subject separately based on cut-offs as decided by IBPS.

  • Duration of the test – 3 hours
  • Total number of questions – 155
  • Total marks – 200
  • Subjects – Reasoning & computer aptitude, general awareness, English language and data analysis & interpretation
Besides, there will a letter and essay writing test of 30 minutes duration for 25 marks in the Main.

In both the above online exams, other than for the English language test, the candidates have the option to select English or Hindi as their medium of the test. There will be negative marking for incorrect answers and it will be one-fourth of the marks assigned to that question.

How to apply

Candidates have to apply for the said recruitment process through online only. The How to Apply section will guide you with the application process. The online application portal will remain open from 07 Aug 2019 to 28 Aug 2019. Before applying, you should have scanned images of your passport photo, signature and left-hand thumb impression ready with you. You will also need to upload a scanned image of a handwritten declaration written by you. The text for the declaration is given in the notification. You will need an e-mail ID through which IBPS will be able to intimate you from time to time.

The candidates will then have to visit the IBPS website Click open the link 'CRP PO/MT' and then follow the steps to register and apply online. Before final submission, the candidates will be prompted to upload the above four documents. The details of the exam centre, venue, address, date and time will be intimated to the candidates through call letters well before the exam. The candidates need to download the call letters from the IBPS website. Intimations regarding the call letters will be sent to them through email or SMS.

The fees are to be paid online within the given dates. The fees are as follows.
  • For SC, ST and PwBD candidates – Rs 100/-
  • For the rest – Rs 600/-
