Learn about RRB NTPC - one of the most popular Govt. recruitment exams of India

Want to know what is the RRB NTPC exam? Non-Technical Popular Categories (NTPC) is a very popular recruitment examination conducted by the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs). Every year, more than 30,000 young men and women get Central Government jobs through this exam. In this first part on the topic, the author discusses various aspects of the exam.

Central Government fills up various posts under its Ministries/Departments/Offices through different recruiting agencies like Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Staff Selection Commission (SSC), Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) and other similar agencies. RRBs recruit young men and women for various posts under the zonal railways. One of the most well-known examinations conducted jointly by all RRBs is Non-Technical Popular Categories (NTPC) Examination. In 2019, RRBs announced NTPC Examination and more than 42 lakh candidates have applied for various posts under NTPC. The approximate number of vacancies in 2019 is 35277, out of which 24649 are Graduate-level vacancies and remaining 10628 are X+II-level vacancies. In this two-part article, let us try to know the details of this very popular recruitment examination.

Posts filled up through RRB NTPC Examination

The RRB NTPC 2019 Examination has been notified by Ministry of Railways, Railway Recruitment Boards Detailed Centralised Employment Notice No. CEN 01/2019. Every candidate (even future candidates) must go through this detailed advertisement very carefully for understanding various aspects of RRB NTPC Examination. The posts which are filled up through NTPC Examination can be divided into two broad categories. The Under-Graduate level posts and the Graduate-level posts.

The Under-Graduate level posts

The Under-Graduate level posts which are filled up through NTPC Examination are:
  • Junior Clerk cum Typist
  • Account Clerk cum Typist
  • Junior Time Keeper
  • Trains Clerk
  • Commercial cum Ticket Clerk
Out of these posts, first four categories of posts come under Level-2 pay scale and the fifth category comes under Level-3 pay scale of 7th Central Pay Commission.

The Graduate level posts

The Graduate level posts which are filled up through NTPC Examination are:
  • Traffic Assistant
  • Goods Guard
  • Senior Commercial cum Ticket Clerk
  • Senior Clerk cum Typist
  • Junior Account Assistant cum Typist
  • Senior Time Keeper
  • Commercial Apprentice
  • Station Master
The first category of posts comes under Level 4 pay scale of 7th Central Pay Commission, whereas next five categories come under Level 5 pay scale and last two categories come under Level 6 scale of pay.

Reservations applicable

For RRB NTPC, the reservations are applicable for SC, ST, OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), EWS, PwBD, Ex-Service Man and relaxations in age are applicable for various other eligible categories. The details may be seen in the Notification mentioned above.

Educational Qualification

For Under-Graduate level posts, the candidates must completely qualify X+II-level examination from any recognized Board without any backlog. For Graduate level posts, the candidates must completely qualify Graduation without any backlog from any recognized University.

Eligibility relating to age

For Under-Graduate level posts, the lower and upper age limits are 18 years and 30 years, respectively. For Graduate level posts, the lower and upper age limits are 18 years and 33 years, respectively. The age will be calculated on 1st July of the year of examination. This means for NTPC-2019, the age will be counted on 1st July 2019. Further age relaxation is available for various reserved categories. For details, the candidates must go through Para 5 of the Notification.

Medical standard

There are various categories of posts filled up through NTPC Examination. Candidates must remember that for different posts, different medical standards are applicable. The detailed medical standards can be seen at Para 3 of the Notification.

How to apply

The application for RRB NTPC is required to be filled online during the prescribed time-limit announced in the Notification. The online applications are to be filled going to the website: https://rrbonlinereg.co.in/. The candidates are required to fill only one application for all posts for which they desire to apply giving the order of preference in the application form. Candidates can also apply for vacancies under different RRBs. The candidates who are not Graduate, should not apply for Graduation-level posts. The application fee is Rs. 500/- for candidates who do not come under any fee relaxation criteria and those who come under various fee relaxation criteria are required to pay Rs. 250/- as the application fee. Candidates must note that after the CBT-1 (Tier-1 of the examination), Rs. 400/- and Rs. 250/-, respectively, are returned to the candidates after deducting bank charges.

Candidates must remember that their names, parents' names and Date of Birth should match with these details in their respective Xth-standard certificates. If any discrepancy is detected at a later stage, such applications are liable to be summarily rejected.

What is the meaning of year of the examination?

It has been noted that most of the candidates, the coaching institutions and even the trainers have great confusion on the year of examination in respect of Government recruitment process. The author wishes to clarify that in the Government recruitment process, the year of examination means the examination to fill up the vacancies created during 1st July of the preceding year to 30th June of the current year. It has no relation to the date when the examination is being held. For example, NTPC-2019 examination is held generally to fill up the vacancies created during 1st July 2018 to 30th June 2019. Naturally, this examination will be held definitely after 1st July 2019 and the examination process may continue even in 2020.
