They should accumulate and log a specified hour (min. 250 hours) of flying training under experienced pilot or academy as per Part 61, Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) section 61.129 along with medical certificate from an Aviation Medical Examiner.

Commercial pilots working for charter companies have many other non-flight duties to perform along with flying. Some of the typical work that a commercial pilot must do are:

Single-Engine Commercial Pilot: This is the initial or the first step for people who would like to make their career as a pilot and referred as the Commercial Single-Engine Land (CSEL) course. The course is conducted in a single-engine Piper Arrow complex training aircraft and help to perfect the use of rudder. It covers Chandelles, Eights-on-Pylons, and Lazy Eights types of planes.

Multi-Engine Commercial Pilot: This is a complex course as it is conducted in a multi-engine Piper Seminole training aircraft, it has a constant speed propeller and retractable landing gear. The course is also referred to as Commercial Multi-Engine Land (CMEL) course. The course covers topics such as Slow Flight, Stalls, and VMC Demos, focusing on proper procedures for complex emergency situations.

Commercial Pilot License Course Requirement

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires students to log a minimum flight hour in order to be eligible for a commercial pilot licence. The required total flight hours for each of our Commercial Pilot courses are given below:
  1. 18 total flight hours for the Single-Engine Initial Certificate.
  2. 10 total flight hours for the Single-Engine Add-On Rating.
  3. 65 total flight hours in order to be eligible for the Commercial Pilot Multi-Engine Land Certificate.

Commercial Pilot License Course Syllabus

The below syllabus may vary from academy to academy, but the overall course will cover all the topic that are mentioned or required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The course will be taught in only one language and that is English.

Theory: The theory part will include the following topics:
  • Commercial pilot operations, flight considerations and decision making.
  • Environmental and ice control systems.

  2. Stage-II: The second stage covers the Performance manoeuvres Chandelles, Lazy eight and steep turns.

  3. Stage-III: The third stage covers ground reference manoeuvres and eight on pylon.

  4. Stage-IV: The fourth stage covers the following:
    • Navigation, navigation system and ATC radar diversion services.
    • Pilotage and dead reckoning.
    • Lost procedures.

  5. Stage-V: The fifth stage covers the following:
    • Slow flight, stalls and manoeuvring during slow flight.
    • Spin awareness.
    • Power-on and power-off stalls.

  6. Stage-VI: The sixth stage covers the following:
    • System and equipment malfunctions.
    • Emergency operations, descent, approach and landing.
    • Emergency equipment and survival gear.

  7. Stage-VII: The seventh stage covers pressurization, supplemental oxygen and high-altitude operations.

  8. Stage-VIII: The eighth stage checks the ride preparation.

This is originally known as the "Kerala Flying Club", registered under the Indian companies act 1956. In 1980, the name was changed to "Kerala Aviation Training Centre (KATC)". When the government bought the institute and with approval from DGCA, Kerala Aviation Training Centre was renamed as Rajiv Gandhi Academy for Aviation Technology (RAGAAT). The main objective of the academy is to promote flying, gliding and aeronautics and all aspects connected with aviation.

The institute has an intake of 33 in each batch with a classroom facility. The PPL course duration is 1 year while CPL is a 3 years course. It provides ground class and flying training for both PPL and CPL license course.

The students are selected as per written test (objective type) comprising of English, physics, maths and general awareness. Candidates need to secure min. 50% marks. The successful candidates are called for interview, once you clear the interview, the last is the Pilot Aptitude Test. The merit list will be prepared after the medical exam.
