Aircraft Maintenance Engineering careers with Boeing-AIESL free Apprenticeship course


Are you searching for free training courses in aircraft maintenance engineering in India? Boeing and Air India Engineering Services Ltd. (AIESL) has announced applications open for the free training for the AMEApprenticeship Program. This article provides complete information on the eligibility requirements, entrance exam pattern, and the application procedure.

In collaboration with Air India Engineering Services Limited (AIESL), Boeing conducts an annual Accelerated Apprenticeship Program for enhancing aircraft maintenance skills of aircraft maintenance engineers. Like last year, there are no tuition fees for the second batch this year beginning in mid-October 2019, and no fee is required to be paid either for the enrollment or for the entrance exam. However, the selected candidates need to make their own arrangements for accommodation, food, transport, and other expenses. The seats are limited to a maximum of 25.

About the aircraft maintenance engineering course

Over a period of one year, there are classroom sessions for three months and hands-on training on Boeing aircraft for nine months. The entire apprenticeship will be at AIESL, Mumbai. The course curriculum has been compiled with the expertise of Boeing professionals in the field with the teaching and training focusing on Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR)-66 modules done by skilled and qualified instructors of Air India. The smart classrooms are equipped with highly advanced multimedia training tools. As part of the course, you will also develop communication skills and other aspects of soft skills' training with opportunities to interact with professionals from the aviation industry or pursue a career in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering.



Although you will get job placement support through sessions that will develop your skills to prepare for interview coordination with potential employers, the successful completion of the course does not guarantee a job either with AIESL or with Boeing. It does equip you with relevant skills for an employment opportunity but the course coordinators do not guarantee that you will get a job for sure.

Eligibility requirements for aircraft maintenance engineering course

To be eligible to apply for the apprenticeship, you should be in the final semester/OJT (On Job Training) of a three-year course at any DGCA-approved AME college. Those who have passed out of a three-year course from a DGCA-approved AME college can also apply. Additionally, you must pass the entrance exam. In case you have a backlog of a module exam or a DGCA paper, you can still apply, but not if you have a college semester paper backlog.

Students from the Avionics stream and the B1 Helicopter stream are also welcome to apply but should note that the training provided is of a specific wing aircraft and certain CAR modules of the Avionics stream are not part of the modules of this course.

How candidates are selected

There are two rounds to the selection process. In round one, you have to appear for an online test at specific centres in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Kochi, and Hyderabad. Those who clear this round can then appear for the second round. This is also an online one, comprising of a personality test and a virtual video interview, which is scheduled at a test centre in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore.

Aircraft maintenance engineering entrance test format

The first round of the entrance test includes four parts that check English, aptitude and a domain test on concepts learned during your three-year AME course. For each, there is a time limit assigned with a specific number of questions. You must answer all the questions.

1. English Comprehension Test

All aspects or English language skills are tested, including vocabulary (e.g. synonyms and antonyms), grammar (e.g. sentence construction), and reading comprehension.

Number of questions: 18. Duration: 16 minutes.

2. Logical Ability

This part of the test is to understand your ability to interpret things objectively and analytical skills of argument. So you will be tested on deductive reasoning (e.g. puzzles), and inductive reasoning (e.g. recognizing patterns in analogies and number series).

Number of questions: 14. Duration: 14 minutes.

3. Quantitative Ability

You will be tested on numerical ability and accuracy in various types of math calculations. This includes basic concepts of numbers (e.g. fractions), theories related to numbers (e.g. basic algebra), applied Mathematics.

Number of questions: 14. Duration: 20 minutes.

4. Domain Test

This part of the test is to assess your technical knowledge which was taught in the AME 3-year course. It includes electrical and electronic fundamentals, digital techniques, hardware, maintenance practices, basics of Aerodynamics, Aviation legislation, etc.

Number of questions: 50. Duration: 75 minutes.



Round 2

The second round includes, first, a Personality Test to make an appraisal of your behavior, and emotional patterns. There are 90 questions to be answered within 20 minutes. This will be followed up with a virtual video Interview to gauge your skills and competencies in a specifically planned and coordinated virtual interview. There are 10 questions to be answered within 30 minutes.

Note: As such, you do not need to score any minimum marks as the entire exam format has been designed in a way to provide for relative grading. There is also no negative marking for wrong answers. You can check the official website for sample questions for Round 1.

How to apply

Submit the online application form. A few of the important queries you will need to answer are whether or not you are presently in an OJT, whether you have cleared the AME License exam module based on the newer system or older system, how many DGCA papers you have passed, whether you have any college semester back-papers, etc. You will also need to mention if you have a BAME license and how many AME License examination modules you have cleared.



After the application

Once you have successfully submitted your online application, you will get a confirmation email and the Admit Card with test centre details and timings. You must bring along this Admit Card along with a Government-issued issued photo ID proof to the test centre for Round 1. After Round 1, you will get an email communication that will inform you if your application has been approved or rejected.

In case your application is approved and you have been shortlisted for Round 2, you have to appear for the second round at the test centre. Take along your Admit Card and a Government-issued photo ID proof again for the test. You will later get an email communication to inform you of the final status, namely whether you have been selected or rejected or been placed on a waitlist.

The aviation industry is having a boom time in our country. Many cities are being included in the air routes and new airports are coming into existence. In this scenario, it makes sense to go for such apprenticeship programs especially when they are being offered free by the Boeing which is a company of repute.
