Introduction:

Cabin crew are professionals that are responsible for the care, ease and protection and welfare of passengers on a flight. The person should have exceptional communication skills in English and also a native language if possible.

Cabin Crew duties

Some of the basic duties that a cabin crew includes:
i. Greet passengers when they board or exit the flight and help them to get to their seat. They also need to provide help to senior citizens, Women carrying small children, disabled or person with illness, etc.
ii. Provide safety instructions, information and demonstrate the use and procedures of using the safety equipment's.

Cabin Crew requirements

The basic requirements for cabin crew vary between airlines. Some of the common requirements are:
a) The candidate should be over 18 years of age with good health/fitness and pass the medical check-up. Some even ask for the ability to swim to at least 25 meters.
b) Usually, a cabin crew member needs to be between 5.2 inches (157cm) to 6.2 inches (188cm) tall, with weight in proportion to height. Good vision and hearing are also preferred. These may vary between airlines
c) The candidate must have appeared or completed 10+2 or higher secondary from a recognized board/university. However, any degree or a degree in nursing, travel, tourism, hospitality management, sports, etc. will be an added advantage.
d) The candidate needs to have a valid passport with no restriction of travel to any country. And be living within the proximity of 90 minutes of travelling to the airport.
e) A cabin crew member requires a good standard of education, including GCSEs (grades A-C) in maths and English, or equivalent qualifications. vocational qualifications (NVQs and BTECs) could add to their advantage.
f) Previous experience/ apprenticeships in a customer service or similar background work will also be useful as it provides good communication skills, customer interaction, etc.
g) Vocational courses involving an element of customer service, e.g. travel and tourism, or hospitality and catering, could provide some useful background knowledge. Similarly, apprenticeships in these areas could provide helpful skills.
h) A cabin crew member needs to look smart and tattoos and piercings are discouraged by many airlines.

Cabin Crew qualities

Cabin crew professionals must have good customer service skills with excellent oral communication skills. He/she should be accepting criticism, remain calm, have patience and work under pressure and stressful conditions. They should have basic knowledge of safety (CPR) and the security of both equipment and people. They must enjoy working, helping and have a friendly nature.
