Scope of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Course in India

Did you know that Aviation is one of the fastest-growing sectors in India? Check out the scope of aircraft maintenance course in India

The aviation sector is one of the fastest-growing sectors in India. India is also one of the fastest-growing markets in the aviation sector, globally. As per a report published by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), in the year 2010, close to 79 million people travelled within or to/from India. In the year 2017, the number became 158 million, which is almost double in 7 years. It is estimated that the number will grow to nearly 520 million in another 18 years. In this article, we will understand what exactly is aircraft maintenance engineering, who is it ideal for & what is the scope of aircraft maintenance engineering course in India.

What exactly is Aircraft Maintenance Engineering?

As the name suggests, aircraft maintenance engineering deals with the repairs & maintenance of aircraft. Since an aircraft consists of numerous parts, they ten to go through wear & tear after prolonged use. Before any flight takes off, the aircraft has to be properly inspected for safety & made sure it's functioning correctly. A 'Flight Releasing Certificate' has to be issued by the engineer & only then the flight is supposed to take off. Aircraft Maintenance Engineering is an exciting career option. Once the 4-year course is completed, an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer licence would be issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Government of India.

Eligibility Criteria for Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Course

Candidate should have completed 12th standard OR 3 years diploma course in engineering in any branch OR any higher qualification in science like B.Sc with Physics and Mathematics at the time of admission. Candidate must have a minimum of 45% 12th Standard in PCM (Physics-Chemistry-Maths) or equivalent. Also, the candidate's age should be between 16 years to 28 years at the time of admission. You can refer to the prospectus of institutions offering the course for detailed eligibility criteria.

Why is there an ever-increasing demand for Aircraft Maintenance Engineers?

As previously mentioned, the aviation sector is booming in India. People prefer travelling by flight as compared to other modes like trains or buses. Reduction in flight fares has also significantly contributed to the increase in adoption of flights as a mode of travel. Also, the opening of new airports in various parts of the country under the UDAN & RCS Scheme of Central Government has contributed to the same. Due to all these factors, the number of flights & air traffic has increased manifold. Since every flight takes off only post clearance from an AME, they are always in demand. According to various reports, there are only a few thousand aircraft maintenance engineers in India having approved licenses. Due to this, the need for aircraft maintenance engineers is ever-increasing, but the supply of skilled workforce is less. Due to this, there is significant demand for licensed aircraft maintenance engineers in India currently, which is likely to increase in years to come.

Some of the examples of these companies include GoAir, Indigo Airlines, Spicejet, Air Asia, Vistara, as well as many other international & regional airlines etc.
Private/Chartered Jet Companies- There are many companies across India which own private jets which are given on lease/rental to corporates, travel companies, etc. Such companies also regularly hire aircraft maintenance engineers for their own aircraft

Some examples of such companies are Boeing, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, etc.

  • Defence Forces- If you always dream of joining the defence forces, you can fulfil the same by becoming an aircraft maintenance engineer. Defence forces also require licensed aircraft maintenance engineers for carrying out maintenance and repairs of their aircraft.

  • Companies manufacturing components/parts- Apart from the companies manufacturing aircraft directly, companies which are into manufacturing of spare parts or various components required in an aircraft may also hire aircraft maintenance engineers- both freshers as well as experienced engineers since they have significant on the job experience.

  • Aviation Training Institutes- There are many institutes across the country which impart various aviation courses. This may include technicians, aircraft crew, pilots, etc. Aircraft maintenance engineers may be employed in such institute as faculty members or trainers.
Salary of Aircraft Maintenance Engineers in India

  • Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineers get lucrative salary packages from employers- especially when compared to engineers from other general streams. The exact salary may vary from company to company. For new joiners, the pay might be low, but it increases steadily over time. Aircraft Maintenance Engineers have a critical role in the aviation sector. Hence, they command a lot of respect in this sector.

Conclusion

You would have also heard of a few Indian airlines closing down or suspending their operations due to tremendous debt and people losing their jobs. This may have brought a thought of uncertainty in your mind regarding the future of the aviation sector related jobs. It is important to understand that while some companies may close down, newer companies would be born to fill the void with more efficient & streamlined way of doing business. As mentioned earlier, India is one of the top growing markets globally in the aviation sector & new airports are coming up steadily at various locations across India, which is bound to increase the air traffic further. Hence there would be a constant demand for the skilled workforce for aircraft maintenance. Being a specialized course which is not so common, the demand for such qualified engineers is quite huge and completing aircraft maintenance engineering course ensure bright prospects.
