Aircraft Maintenance Engineering refers to the repair and maintenance of aircraft. Candidates require immense skills and passion to do an AME course. The candidates who are aspiring to become an AME have to fulfil the following criteria:

  1. Candidate must pass 10 +2 with a non-medical background or any high qualification in science with Mathematics and Physics at the time of admission or an equivalent AICTE approved 3 years engineering diploma in any of the streams.

  2. The age of the candidate has to be between 16 to 28 years at the time of admission.

  3. Candidate must not have colour blindness or any other physical disability.

  4. Candidate must have a minimum of 45 percent marks in 10+2 in PCM or equivalent.

AME Admission procedure

The candidate aspiring to become an AME has to follow the following admission procedure

  1. The first step involves filling up the form for Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Common Entrance Test (AME CET)

  2. After clearing the exam, on the basis of All India Rank (AIR) of AME CET, the candidates get admission in and AME institute that is approved by DGCA, Government of India.

Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Course Duration

The duration of the course is 4 years which includes 2 years of the academic program and the remaining two years of practical training. Academic knowledge is imparted at a DGCA approved AME institute and practical training is held in a flying environment such as airlines etc. After the completion of the academic program, Institute issues a certificate of Completion of Course to the candidates and then the candidate has to go through a practical training where he or she is given a stipend. After clearing the academic and practical training a license is issued by DGCA. A licensed AME can work in a government sector or private sector.


The course entails a 4-year license program during which a candidate has to go through a 2-year academic program and 2 years of practical training in a flying environment. The 2-year academic curriculum includes theoretical and practical knowledge of aircraft's principal, components and engineering. There are 17 modules approved by DGCA, Government of India. The candidates can choose their streams and the modules depend on the stream of the candidate. Candidates have to clear all the modules to attain the license. However, module one and two are not applicable to India.
