KVPY interview tips

The KVPY interview is no ordinary interview. It is definitely not like a usual job interview. Unlike a job interview, where various aspects of the individual's personality, knowledge and experience are put to test, here in KVPY it is mostly the subject knowledge that you will be tested upon, namely physics, chemistry, math or biology.

  1. Filling up the Recommendation Form and Self Appraisal Form. These are two very important documents that are to be filled after the results of the aptitude test are out. The Recommendation Form is to be filled by a teacher, so see that your teacher recommends you as best as he or she can. The self-appraisal form, as the name suggests, is to be filled up by you. Be meticulous and careful in filling it. Think a while, before you select your favourite subject. Most of the questions during the interview will be asked from your favourite subject. So your favourite subject should be the one in which you have greater depth and knowledge, not the one you like the most. Among other important things, you will have to mention about previous participation in any science based programs and exhibitions during your school life. There might be questions based on them.

  2. Refresh your subject knowledge, especially your favourite subject. NCERT books are the best bet in this respect. Know the syllabus. In any case, most of the questions will be from the syllabus that have been taught to you. To judge higher level of your understanding, a few questions might be from elsewhere, which you might not have been taught. Don't panic in such situations. Answer whatever you know about them, otherwise say a polite no.

  3. While preparing for your favourite subject, do not neglect the others, as questions will be asked from the other subjects too.

  4. Know all about KVPY, who organizes it and for whom it is meant. Learn about the benefits that accrue from being a KVPY Fellow. These and other details about this fellowship program can be obtained from the official website of KVPY. Other sources like Quora also help a lot in enriching your knowledge and answering many of your doubts.

  5. Interact with your seniors or relatives who have already cleared or appeared for the interview. You will get first-hand information from them about the conduct of the interview and the difficulty level of the questions being asked. Ask your teachers about the doubts you may have on the concerned subject.

  6. Conducting mock interviews help greatly. More the mock interviews you attend, the better prepared you will be. Seek every opportunity to attend a mock interview. You may arrange it with your friends or teachers. In case you are studying in one of the reputed JEE coaching institutes, you may get to experience a few mock interviews at the institute itself.

  7. During the day of the interview, get early and reach the venue well in time. You may dress in your school uniform or even formals will do. Once you reach the venue, get aware of the surroundings and have a casual talk with other students, if you like; it helps soothe your nerves.

  8. When your turn comes, enter the room with full confidence and a positive attitude. A smiling face does help. Greet the interviewers and take your seat when asked. While the interview is on, be a keen listener and do not miss on anything the interviewer says. At times, you will asked to go to the board and solve a certain equation or chemical reaction, as the case may be. Be confident in your approach. Explain the steps, as you solve the problem on the board.

  9. Present yourself as a budding research student, who is keen to learn and get deep into the field of basic sciences. The whole concept of selecting academically talented students for this scholarship program is to encourage them to opt for a career in scientific research and thus contribute to the cause of basic sciences in the country. Know about some of the prominent institutes like IISc Bangalore and the seven IISERs, which are the premier institutes in the field of basic sciences and research in the country.

  10. In case you do not know the answers to any of the questions, do not bluff. Be honest and say a polite no to questions that are beyond you. Like most interviews, it always help if you are truthful about your knowledge. Beating around the bush does not help.

  11. After your interview is over, thank the interview panel and make a graceful exit.

As said earlier, the final result will depend upon your performance both in the aptitude test as well as interview. Even though only 25% weightage, it is crucial for you to do well in the interview. Since the aptitude test is no more in your hands, do best in the interview and all the best to your selection as a KVPY Fellow.
