Both the National Institute of Science Education and Research (shortly known as NISER) in Bhubaneswar and University of Mumbai - Department of Atomic Energy Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (UM-DAE CEBS), Mumbai were established by the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India in the year of 2007 to train the students by offering 5-year integrated M.Sc. program in Biological, Chemical, Mathematical and Physical sciences. The center of NISER and UM-DAE CEBS are located at the Jatni campus and Vidyanagari campus respectively. However, although both institutes offer the same course of study, the degree is awarded by two separate hands. While the Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI) which is a deemed-to-be University under the Department of Atomic Energy is responsible to award the degree in NISER, it's awarded by the University of Mumbai in UM-DAE CEBS.

About entrance exam

Full form of NEST is National Entrance Screening Test. It is a compulsory computer-based test (CBT) / online examination for the candidates interested to take admission to a 5-year integrated M.Sc. program in Biological, Chemical, Mathematical and Physical sciences either at NISER, Bhubaneswar or UM–DAE CEBS, Mumbai. The examination will be held in 91 centers all over India this year. The duration of the exam is 3 hours and 30 minutes. There will be two test sessions - one is from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and another is between 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m out of which applicants will be assigned to any one session.

Scholarship and opportunities

All the candidates who will take admission to this program will be entitled to an annual scholarship of Rs. 60,000/- through DISHA program controlled by the Indian Government Department of Atomic Energy. Additionally, Rs. 20,000/- will also be granted for summer internship every year. Candidates for the INSPIRE-SHE program selected by DST will be eligible for the INSPIRE scholarship.

All former pupils are presently engaged in various Ph.D. programs at a large number of national or international universities/institutes. Moreover, if the toppers at both the institutes score above a certain threshold in aggregate at the end of the program, they will be eligible for the interview directly for admission to Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) training school.

Seat availibility

  1. NISER has 200 seats including all reservations as per government rules for the batch of 2020
  2. UM-DAE CEBS has 57 seats considering all reservation based on government rules for coming session.

Eligibility criteria

Candidates have to fulfill the following eligibility criteria to register online application in the National Entrance Screening Test, NEST-2020:
  1. Candidates should be passed in Class XII qualifying examination or equivalent examination not before the year of 2018 with minimum 60% aggregate marks or equivalent grade from a recognized Indian Board. The minimum requirement of marks is 55% for SC/ ST/ Divyangjan candidates. Candidates who are appearing in that exam in 2020 may also apply from this entrance test. However, in case the Board awards only Letter Grade, candidates have to submit a certificate issued by the Board specifying equivalent percentage marks. Necessary certificates in support of eligibility criteria have to be produced at the time of admission only.
  2. Date of Birth of the candidates belong to General and OBC category should not be before 1st August 2000. However the same is relaxed by 5 years for the candidates who belong to SC/ ST/ Divyangjan category.

Brief idea on question pattern

As it is a computer-based exam, candidates have to answer the question at the computer terminal using provided electronic equipment at the examination center. The mode of language is English. There will be five sections out of which section I is based on the general section having 30 marks and each of section II to V is based on Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics with 50 marks. Merit list will be prepared based on the summation of the best three sections from section II to V and compulsory section I. Syllabus will be almost the same as CBSE / NCERT's syllabus of class XI-XII.

Application fee

Candidates belong to General / OBC and SC / ST/ OBC category have to pay Rs. 1200/- and Rs. 600/- respectively as application fee. The application fee for female candidates irrespective of their caste is Rs. 600/-. The mode of payment is through online payment gateway using credit/debit card or net-banking. Master card, Visa, RuPay cards are recommended.
