About M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF)

The M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) is Chennai based not for profit non government organization (NGO). It was established in 1988. It was founded by Professor M.S. Swaminathan. This organization is presently working in many State of India like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Orissa.

Foundation is currently working in many areas like Agriculture, Agro-biodiversity management, Coastal Systems Research, Climate Change, Biotechnology, Biodiversity, Eco-technology, Food Security, Health & Nutrition, Information, Education and Communication, Gender and Grass Root Institutions and Media Resource Center.

The main aim of the foundation is the Agriculture and rural development by using new technology and improvement in lives and livelihoods of tribal and rural communities. This organisation is poor and women friendly. This organization provides solutions to problems arises in agriculture, food and nutrition, Health and natural resources and promotes economic growth and employment of poor and women in rural areas.

About Fellowship

The Mina - M.S. Swaminathan Doctoral Fellowship Programme was started by foundation for young researchers. The main objective of this fellowship, which is of 3 year duration is to provide the opportunity to young post-graduates researchers working in the field of agriculture and related fields for sorting out the problems of sustainable development. This fellowship is awarded to students who want to pursue doctoral studies. In addition, they supports research that bring up science-society interactions.


Age must be between 24 to 28. There will be an age relaxation for SC/ST and women candidates up to three years.

Minimum Educational Qualification

  • Post graduate degree in Agriculture /Animal Sciences/Botany/ Fisheries/Environmental sciences/Economics from a recognized university.
  • A good academic record.

Desirable Qualification

  1. M Phil /M.Sc (Agriculture)
  2. NET qualified.

Skills requirement

Aspiring candidates should have interest in 'science-society' interface to address problems of agriculture and sustainable development.


A fellowship amount of INR 25,000/- (consolidated) shall be given per month. There will be an annual assessment for continuation of fellowship and the benefits during this period. Annual assessment is mandatory.

Note: All successful candidates will be enrolled for Ph.D. In University of Madras in Chennai. The Ph.D. subjects are mentioned above.
