About the Fellowship Scheme

The Newton International Fellowship Scheme was started in 2008. The fellowship is provided by the Royal Society, British Academy and Academy of Medical Sciences. The main motive behind this fellowship is to select the excellent early-career postdoctoral researchers from all over the world. In this fellowship, researchers are allowed to work at UK research institutions for two years. From 2015 onward, some additional Fellowships are also being assisted through the Government Newton Fund for partner countries. The Newton Fund is a scheme that endeavors to develop the long-term sustainable growth and well-being of the partner country through building research and innovation capacity. This scheme is a joint venture of the British Academy, the Academy of Medical Sciences and the Royal Society.

Aim of Newton International Fellowship

The primary aims of the Newton International Fellowships are-
  • Support the research and training of best postdoctoral researchers who are at the early stage of their career.
  • Support the researchers from any country outside the UK.
  • Support the researchers by providing an opportunity to work at a UK research institution for two years.
  • Support research across all relevant disciplines from around the world.
  • Promote long-term relations between Newton International Fellows and the UK research base.

What are the eligibility criteria to apply?

To be eligible to apply following are the requirements:
  1. Candidates must have a Ph.D., or is about to complete his/her PhD before the start of the fellowship.
  2. Candidates must have no more than 7 years of active full-time experience after Ph.D. at the time of the application submission.
  3. Non-UK scientists who are in the early stage of their research career and want to research in the UK are eligible to apply for this fellowship.
  4. Candidates should be working outside the UK.
  5. Applicants who completed their PhD at the UK must have been working and based outside the UK for at least one year at the deadline for the application.
  6. Unemployed candidates can also apply but they will have to provide details of their previous supervisor.
  7. Candidates who have applied earlier but were unsuccessful may apply again.
  8. Candidates should be capable of oral and written English.
  9. Candidates should prepare and submit a clearly defined research proposal in consultation with a UK based scientist.

Fellows will have to work in the Royal Society, UK.

What is the duration of the fellowship?

The Newton International Fellowship will be granted for up to two consecutive years.

What is the Fellowship Value?

Fellowship values are provided to fellows at a subsistence rate of £24,000 per annum, which includes: research expenses, relocation expenses (in the first year of fellowship), and contribution to overheads at UK Host Organization.
Successful applicants may also be eligible to receive annual funding following the completion of their fellowship to support networking activities with UK-based researchers.
Payments of fellowships are made quarterly in March, June, September and December.
Note: Consumables may not be used to pay for publication costs and any personal costs.

How to apply for for this scheme?

In this fellowship scheme applications are invited from all countries.
  1. Humanities and social sciences applications should be applied through the British Academy.
  2. Applicants applying for clinical and patient-oriented research should send their application through the Academy of Medical Sciences.
  3. Applicants applying for the natural and physical sciences should be made their applications through the Royal Society's grants management system Flexi-Grant®.

Important Dates

Currently, applications for this fellowship scheme are invited once in a year and opens in January. The current round is now open. Schedule of applications submission is as given below:
  • Opening date: 23 January 2020
  • Closing date: Thursday, 26 March 2020, 15:00 UK time
  • Expected results: September 2020
