ISRO - India's ace satellite launch agency ISRO or the Indian Space Research Organisation was established in the year 1969 by the Government of India under the able leadership of the visionary Dr Vikram Sarabhai. ISRO has been the pioneer in the development of space technology in the country. The success achieved by ISRO in the development of space technology and rocket launching facilities has made ISRO the sixth-largest space agency in the world. Over the years, it has launched a number of communication and remote sensing satellites that have been used for a variety of purposes like broadcasting, weather forecasting, disaster management, communication, navigation and even distance education. ISRO these days uses cutting edge technology in the development of heavy launchers, launch vehicles, semi-cryogenic engines, composite materials and so on. Spread across the country, ISRO has a number of centres.
Yuva Vigyani KAryakram (YUVIKA) Yuva Vigyani KAryakram or YUVIKA, which also goes by the popular name Young Scientist Programme was started by the Indian Space Research Organisation in the year 2019. This is the second session of the programme that is going to be held in May 2020. YUVIKA aims at selecting school students studying in class 9 and imparting them with basic knowledge in the field of space science, space technology and their applications. The aim of the program is to help generate interest in participating students for the emerging and exciting field of space science. The students get to attend lectures and workshops by eminent space scientists from ISRO. The young generation will thus become aware of the opportunities in this field that may help them in future to take up a career or higher education course in the aerospace industry.
About the programme The programme will be held in May 2020, during the summer vacation, for a duration of two weeks from 11-22 May. It includes lectures and talks by eminent scientists, lab visits, interaction with experts, sharing of experiences, practicals and feedback sessions. The programme is entirely residential and will be conducted in four different ISRO centres across the country. These centres are located at Ahmedabad, Shillong, Bengaluru and Thiruvananthapuram. The students will be allocated to one of these centres. At the centres, they will be accommodated in ISRO guesthouses or hostels. The students will be reimbursed AC II train fare from their nearest home station to the reporting centre and back. Expenses on course materials, lodging and boarding will also be covered by ISRO. One guardian or parent will also be reimbursed AC II train fare for drop and pick up of the student from the reporting centre.
Selection procedure Three students from every State and Union Territory of the country will be selected for the programme. Participants willing to apply should have passed class 8 and currently studying in class 9. Their education should be from ICSE, CBSE or any State Board school. Five additional seats are earmarked for OCI (Overseas Citizens of India) students from across the country. The candidates need to register for the Young Scientist Programme online by visiting the ISRO website at www.isro.gov.in. The selection will be based on the academic performance of the students in class 8 and their extracurricular activities at the district, state, national and international level. Higher the level, greater will be the weightage in selection. Additional weightage is given to students studying in rural schools. There is no fee involved in the entire process. The expenses are all taken care of by ISRO.
Selection criteria These are the following criteria that will be used for selecting the students for the Young Scientist Programme 2020.
In case of a tie between two or more students, the student who is younger in age will be given preference.
