NHTET eligibility test April 2020 online applications for Hotel Management teaching vacancies


Teachers in hotel management institutes in India are required to appear for the National Hospitality Teachers Eligibility Test (NHTET). This article provides information on NHTET-2020, scheduled for April, which provides you with the opportunity to take up teaching in the posts of Assistant Lecturers (AL) and Teaching Associates (TA) in IHMs and FCIs in India. Details of the eligibility requirements, NHTET exam questions, and the application procedure have been provided.

National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT), Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India has issued the notification (Advt. no. 20G3CW) for the National Hospitality Teachers Eligibility Test 2020 (NHTET-2020), scheduled for the month of April. Scores in this test will determine whether or not you are eligible for a faculty position as an Assistant Lecturer (AL) and Teaching Associate (TA) in NCHMCT's Institutes of Hotel Management (IHMs) and Food Craft Institutes (FCIs). Currently, there are 66 IHMs that are affiliated with NCHMCT, with 21 Central IHMs, 24 State IHMs, 1 PSU run IHM, and 20 private IHMs. The vacancies at these institutes are filled up through direct recruitment at the institute with their individual selection process.

NHTET eligibility requirements

Only citizens of India are allowed to appear for NHTET. Other eligibility requirements are -

Age criteria

The age should not be more than 35 years. The age will be relaxed by five years for SC/ST/PWD categories, and three years for OBC categories. The maximum age will be as on 31st July 2020. The criteria for age will thus be as follows-
(i) For Teaching Associates: General and EWS Categories - 30 years; OBC Category- 33 years; SC/ST and PD Categories- 35 years.
(ii) For Assistant Lecturers: General and EWS Categories - 35 years; OBC Category - 38 years; SC/ST and PD Categories - 40 years.



Academic qualifications and Experience criteria

You must have a full-time Bachelor's Degree in Hospitality Administration or in Hotel Management after 10+2 from a recognized University with a minimum of 55%. Additionally, you should have a minimum of two years of experience in the hospitality industry after obtaining the Degree. Note that if you undertake industrial training as part of the Degree course, then that will not be considered as experience.
OR
You must have a full-time Master's Degree in Hospitality Administration or in Hotel Management with a minimum of 55% after having completed a full-time Bachelor's Degree in Hospitality Administration or in Hotel Management from a recognized university with at least 55% marks.

Note: If you are appearing in the fourth semester (that is, the final semester)/final year exam of the Master's Degree and have passed all the subjects of the previous year/semester, then also you can apply for NHTET-2020. However, if you are in the second year of the Master's Degree program (that is, the third semester), then you cannot apply.

NHTET application fees

You will need to purchase a Demand Draft (DD) from any approved Bank for the requisite amount of the application fee and the DD number has to be entered in the online application form. The fee for the application form is as follows:
(i) General, OBC category male candidates: Rs.800/-.
(ii) SC/ST/PD category candidates: Rs.400/-.
(iii) Female candidates of all categories: Rs.400/-.

NHTET-2020 papers format

NHTET will comprise of three question papers, all having objective type questions. It will be scheduled for two sessions, with Paper-I and Paper-II in the first session and Paper-III in the second session. The first session is from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. with 50 questions, with 50 questions for each Paper and for a total of 100 marks. A correct answer will be awarded 2 marks and half negative mark will be given for an incorrect answer or for a double attempt. Zero marks will be given for a question that has not been attempted at all. The second session of Paper III is from 11.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. with 100 questions and a total score of 200 marks. The marking system is the same as for the previous two papers. It is advisable to check the official brochure to know the minimum qualifying marks required to be eligible for the posts of ALs and TAs.

The questions in Paper-I will test the teaching methodology and research aptitude and accordingly will be based on comprehension, reasoning, divergent thinking, general knowledge, etc. The questions in Paper-II will be related to nutrition, food science, etc. Questions related to hotel accounts will be part of the paper for hospitality-related teaching posts. The questions in Paper III will be focused on four areas, namely food production, food, and beverage service and its management, management of accommodation operations, and housekeeping management.

The test centers are at Noida, Mumbai, Jaipur, Gandhinagar, Chennai, Bhopal, Kolkata, Guwahati, Chandigarh, Bhubaneswar, Gurdaspur, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Bengaluru, Hajipur (near Patna), and Thiruvananthapuram.

When the answer sheet is uploaded at the official website after the test, you are allowed to challenge the answer with documentary proof within four days by mail to diraf-nchm@nic.in.

Important note: You must have the Admit Card and the original of the ID card which you had scanned and uploaded while filling up the online application form; otherwise you cannot appear for the entrance test.

Application procedure for NHTET-2020

You must submit your application in online mode at the official website of Tourism & Hospitality Institute Management System or at the official website of NCHMCT. It is advisable to go through the information brochure for complete details of the eligibility requirements, exam format, etc which is provided to candidates at both these websites.

Documents required to scan and upload these documents during the online application process-
  1. A scanned copy of a passport size photograph.

  2. A scanned copy of any one valid ID card, such as the Aadhar Card or the PAN Card or the Voter ID or the Driving Licence or the Passport.

After successfully submitting the online application form, you need to take a print out of it. Send the printed application along with the requisite fee through a Demand Draft by Speed Post or Registered Post to:

NHTET-2020 Schedule with important dates

Online application begins: 9th February 2020.
Online application ends: 24th April 2020.
Last date for receipt of confirmation sheet along with DD: 27th March 2020.
Admit card can be downloaded from the official website:6th to 11th April 2020.
Date of NHTET-2020: 11th April 2020 in two sittings, from 9 a.m. to 1.30 p.m.
Uploading of answer key: by 12th April 2020.
Last date to challenge answers: 16th April 2020.
Expert committee meeting on the challenged answer and uploading of final Answer Key: latest by 20th April 2020.
Results of NHTET-2020: 24th April 2020.

What to do after NHTET results

The NHTET pass certificate will be dispatched to the candidates as soon as possible, but in case a candidate does not receive the original certificate in time for applying for a vacancy, the result can be downloaded from the official websites and this will be considered as valid to apply for the vacancy.

Final selection process for vacancies

For the selection of Teaching Associates and Assistant Lecturer, institutes will no longer be conducting any interviews. Instead, in addition to the minimum requirement of both the posts are either NHTET-qualified or having PhD on a Hospitality field, there will also be practical and teaching skill tests as follows: (i) The practical skill test of 30 marks will be for all the four core areas of Hospitality. The pass marks for the post of Assistant Lecturer is 15 and for the post of Teaching Associate, it is 12. (ii) The teaching skill test will be of 20 marks. The pass marks for the post of Assistant Lecturer is 10 and for the post of Teaching Associate, it is 8.
