About MIDS
Madras Institute of Development Studies (MIDS) is an institute which is established to undertake the studies and research of the development problems specific to the agro-rural aspects of Tamil Nadu and about the population belonging to the socially and economically backward section of the country. It is a national institute that is operating under the joint sponsorship of the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Government of India through the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi. The institute is the major centre to discuss and identify solutions for the development issues that exist within the state and the country. A lot of doctoral programmes and research projects covering a wide range of social issues and policies in the areas of employment, poverty, discrimination, inequality, political economy, social theory, etc. with reference to the regional, national and global levels are being conducted at MIDS.Ph.D. in Social Science admissions 2020 at MIDS
For the academic year 2020-21, MIDS has invited application for Ph.D. in Social Science (Development Studies / Social Work / Economics / Sociology / Political Science/History / Anthropology). Candidates who satisfy the below mentioned eligibility criteria can apply for the programme.
Eligibility criteria
Fellowship
MIDS do not provide any fellowship support other than Elizabeth Adiseshiah Fellowship. So, candidates who possess fellowships from UGC or any other funding agency for a minimum period of 3 years to carry out Ph.D. research in Social Science are highly eligible to apply. Elizabeth Adiseshiah Fellowship will be given to only one deserving candidate on a competitive basis. The candidate who got selected for Elizabeth Adiseshiah Fellowship will be given Rs. 10,000/- per month for three years.
Candidates who are not holding any fellowship but wish to apply for ICSSR Institutional Doctoral Fellowship programme can also submit their application for the Ph.D. admissions at MIDS. But the application for ICSSR Institutional Doctoral Fellowship programme can be submitted only after the candidate's confirmed admission in MIDS. For such candidates, the final selection for ICSSR fellowship will be done as per the norms of ICSSR and the approval of the University.

Candidates can download the application from the official website of MIDS. The application form should be filled as per the guidelines provided in the form. The filled-in application form along with the necessary documents should be submitted at the institute as both hard copy and soft copy.
Candidates are requested to send the soft copy to phdadmissions2020@mids.ac.in. and the hard copy must be sent in a sealed envelope superscribing "Application for Ph.D. Admission 2020-21" via post to the following address

Note: Along with the filled-in application form, self-attested photocopy of PG/M.Phil. Degree/UGC-NET certificate/ UGC-JRF certificate/certificate of any other fellowship received should be enclosed.
The last date to send the application is 21.02.2020. Incomplete application and the application that reaches MIDS after the last date will be rejected.Selection process
After the submission of the Ph.D. application form, the candidates will be shortlisted by the institute and will be called to attend a written test and interview.
Note: The institute has all rights to reject an application without mentioning the reason. Also, MIDS is not responsible for the delay in communication or postal loss.
The final selection of the shortlisted candidates will be purely based on the quality of research proposal, candidate's performance in the written test, interview and the availability of Supervisors in his/her area of specialization.
After the admissions into the MIDS doctoral programme, the scholars will have to obtain registration from the University of Madras. Also, the institute expects the scholars to follow all the rules and regulations of the Institute, applicable fellowship and the University of Madras in the conduct of their Ph. D. programme. If a candidate fails to register successfully with the University of Madras or fails to clear the course, the provisional admission of that candidate at the MIDS will be cancelled.
Note: The institute does not have hostel facilities and hence the scholars have to find their own accommodation for the entire period of study. Contact details
