About NBRC

National Brain Research Centre (NBRC) is an autonomous institute specially dedicated for Neuroscience Research and Education. It is also a Deemed-to-be university funded by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. NBRC is the only institute in India which offers education and research in the field of Neuroscience. It is a premier research institute in India which is involved in multi-disciplinary research activities related to Neuroscience.

NBRC admissions 2020

For the academic year 2020, NBRC has a released an official notification for admissions into Ph.D. Neuroscience and M.Sc. Neuroscience programmes. Interested candidates are requested to go through the admission procedures mentioned below and apply for the Ph.D. or M.Sc. Neuroscience programmes offered at NBRC before the last date.

Who can apply

Candidates who fulfil the below-mentioned eligibility conditions of NBRC can apply for M.Sc. or Ph.D. Neuroscience programme. Only Indian Nationals can apply for these programmes. During admissions, NBRC follows the Reservation / Concessions for SC / ST / PH candidates as per the rules of the UGC/Government of India.

Eligibility criteria- Ph.D. Neuroscience
  • Candidates who have completed their PG degree or equivalent degree in Life Sciences/ Computer applications/ Pharmacy / Veterinary Science / Physics / Chemistry / Mathematics / Statistics/ Psychology from any recognized institute or university are eligible to apply.

  • Candidates who have completed a minimum 4-years course leading to bachelor's degree or any equivalent degree in Engineering / Technology / Medicine from a recognized institute or university can also apply.

  • Those who are appearing for the final year of their qualifying exam are also allowed to apply.

  • Candidates must hold 55% marks or an equivalent grade point or grade from 10th standard examination onwards.( the average mark is 50% for SC/ST/PH candidates). To determine the eligibility, candidates should calculate their % up to 2 decimal points.



Eligibility criteria- M.Sc. Neuroscience
  • Candidates who have completed their UG degree or equivalent degree in Life Science/ Pharmacy / Veterinary Science / Computer applications/ Physics / Chemistry / Mathematics / Statistics/ Psychology/ Engineering / Technology / Medicine from any recognized institute or university are eligible to apply.

  • Those who are appearing for the final year of their qualifying exam can also apply.

  • Candidates must hold 55% marks or an equivalent grade point or grade from 10th standard examination onwards.( the average mark is 50% for SC/ST/PH candidates). To determine the eligibility, candidates should calculate their % up to 2 decimal points.

NBRC recognized national entrance examinations

For admissions into Ph.D. and M.Sc. Neuroscience programmes, the candidates will be shortlisted for interview only based on their scores in the qualifying examination. So, candidates those who have taken the recognized national entrance examinations of NBRC only can apply for these prgrammes. Mentioned below is the list of national level entrance examinations recognized by NBRC for admissions into M.Sc and Ph.D neuroscience programmes.

Ph.D. programmes
  1. Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences 2019 (JGEEBILS 2019).
  2. Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) (2020) (for Physics).
  3. Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE-2019/GATE-2020) in Mathematics / Physics / Chemistry / Electronics and Communications Engineering/ Electrical Engineering/ Instrumentation Engineering/ Computer Science and Information Technology.
  4. CSIR / UGC / DBT / ICMR examination for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Mathematics /Physics / Chemistry / Biology. Validity of the fellowship should be such that it can be activated on 31st August, 2020 or later.
  5. UGC-NET Lectureship / JRF qualified on / after Dec 2017.

M.Sc. Neuroscience
Candidates will be screened for M.Sc. programme only through Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences 2019 (JGEEBILS 2019)

How to apply

Interested and eligible candidates can apply for M.Sc. /Ph.D. Neuroscience programmes at NBRC through either online or offline mode. The last date of submission of both online and offline application form is 31st March 2020.

Mentioned below is the application form fee for both M.Sc. and Ph.D. Neuroscience programmes.

General category
Online application: Rs. 300/-
Offline application: Rs. 350/-

SC/ST/PH category
Online application: Rs. 150/-
Offline application: Rs. 200/-

Online application procedures

The online application form is available at the official admission website of NBRC. Candidates can fill the form through the 'Apply Online' button and select the channel.

Those who are filling the application through online mode must pay the application form fee through 'SB-Collect' of State Bank of India. The payment link will be available in the last step of the application process.



Offline application procedures

Candidates also have an option to submit the application form through offline mode. The eligible candidates can obtain the application form from NBRC by sending a self-addressed A4 size envelope with a cover note mentioning their preferred course name (Ph.D. /M.Sc.) and the channel(JGEEBILS/JEST/GATE/JRF) via post or courier to The Registrar, National Brain Research Centre, Manesar-122052 Dist. Gurgaon (Haryana). The last date to get the offline application form from NBRC is 1st March 2020.

Offline applicants should pay the application form fee by a demand draft drawn in favour of The Director, National brain Research Centre payable at Gurgaon or Manesar. At the back of the DD, applicants should write their name and the course applied for. JGEEBILS/JEST candidates should write their Reference Code/ Registration No. along with their name and the course applied for. GATE/JRF/UGC-NET LS candidates should write their GATE Roll Number/Fellowship Roll Number, the year of examination and its validity period along with their name at the back of the DD.

The filled-in application form along with the demand draft should be sent via post or courier to the following address on or before the last date (31st March 2020)

Important note:
  1. Candidates who wish to apply for M.Sc./Ph.D programmes at NBRC through JGEEBILS/JEST/GATE/External Fellowship channel must fulfil the minimum eligibility criteria of M.Sc./Ph.D neuroscience course as mentioned earlier in this article.

  2. Candidates who are eligible for both M.Sc. (Neuroscience) and Ph.D. programmes and wish to apply for both the programmes have to submit separate application forms and pay the application form fee separately for each programme.

Selection process

As mentioned earlier, the selection process at NBRC for admissions into the M.Sc and Ph.D programmes will be based on the national level examinations recognized by NBRC. Candidates will be shortlisted based on their scores in the qualify examinations and will be called for the interview process. Final admissions of the candidates into the programmes will be based on the performance of the candidates in the interview and their scores in the qualifying examination.



All the candidates who are admitted into the Ph.D. programmes will receive a Junior Research Fellowship of Rs 31,000 per month + HRA (in lieu of hostel accommodation) for the first two years. After two years, the candidates will be eligible for Senior Research Fellowship of Rs. 35,000 per month + HRA (in lieu of hostel accommodation).

M.Sc. Neuroscience is a 2-year programme where the students have to go through intensive course-work along with the practical courses in the first year and have to do a full-time research project in the second year. Also, candidates are eligible to switch to the Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. programme of NBRC if they successfully complete the requirements for the M.Sc. programme. All the M.Sc students will receive a fellowship of Rs. 12,000 per month (and HRA or hostel accommodation).
