DST Women Scientist Scheme-B (WOS-B) 2020 applications open


Knowledge Involvement in Research Advancement through Nurturing (KIRAN) Division of Department of Science & Technology (DST) has announced the official notification for its Women Scientist Scheme-B (WOS-B) 2020. Interested and eligible candidates can get details of the scheme including eligibility criteria, emoluments, application procedure and selection procedure etc. in this article.

Women are an important part of the workforce that contributes to the science & technology (S&T) domain. But sometimes, a large number of women get left out of the S&T activities due to various circumstances like motherhood and other family responsibilities. To fill this break in career, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) has started the "Women Scientists Scheme (WOS)" during 2002-03. This scheme helps women to re-enter into the science mainstream and provide a launchpad for further forays into the field of science and technology.

About WOS-B Scheme

KIRAN division of the Department of Science & Technology (DST) has taken several revolutionary steps to promote women in the field of Science and Technology, especially, who have a break in their career due to unforeseen reasons. Women Scientist Scheme (WOS–B) scheme specifically addresses challenges confronting women in the area of S&T and gives them an opportunity so that they can restart their careers. Under this scheme, women candidates are eligible to apply only. Women candidates who wish to apply will have to prepare a proposal on the themes proposed for scientific and technological solutions to societal problems and to concentrate on issues to improve quality-of-life at the grassroots level. Such projects should provide possible solutions through the development, adaptation and scaling up of viable technology/ technique and/or laboratory-to-land technology transfer. In this scheme, Women Scientists are endeavouring to make their scientific skills for the benefit of society hence the proposal must bring out the societal benefits.

  • Strengthening Health Care and Nutrition (HN)
  • Energy (ER)
  • Water and Waste Management (WWM)
  • Engineering and IT Solutions to Societal Issues (EIT)
  • Harnessing Advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Note: these areas are indicative only. Proposal on other related topics will also be considered.

Duration of Fellowship

The project tenure will be a maximum of three years. It is mentioned that no further extension will be granted in any circumstances.

Eligibility

Candidates applying from for this fellowship should have a Master or doctoral degree in Science and technology.

Age Limit

Women in the age group of 27–57 years. They should have a break in their career but should have an interest in addressing a well-defined societal challenge through viable S&T interventions
Note: Women working as permanent employees are not eligible to apply in this scheme.

Emoluments

Emoluments under this fellowship scheme have been divided in following slabs:
  1. For Ph.D. students: There will be a fellowship of Rs. 55,000 p.m. plus HRA. Total project cost will not be exceeding Rs.30 lakh including overheads.
  2. For M.Phil./M.Tech. students: A fellowship of Rs 40,000 p.m. plus HRA will be paid to these students. Total project cost will not be exceeding Rs 25 lakh including overheads.
  3. For M.Sc. students: Rs.31,000 p.m. plus HRA will be paid. Total project cost will not be exceeding Rs 20 lakh including overheads.
Note: The total project cost that will be sanctioned includes the above fellowship of Principal Investigator (PI), consumables, travel, contingencies, and minor equipment. However, HRA and overheads will be excluded.

How to Apply

To submit application and proposal online, first of all, interested candidates will have to register themselves online on the WOS-a portal. While registering on the portal, candidates will have to fill basic details like name, date of birth, father's name, corresponding address, email address and mobile no. etc. Candidates will also have to fill employment status in the form. After completion of registration, the candidate can submit the proposal online. After online submission a hardcopy of the submitted proposal must be sent to the following address:

Note: Basic research proposals will not be entertained under WOS-B.
