Coronavirus masks

Please do not needlessly buy, hoard masks and wear them when not really required. A shortage of masks for those who really need them will create a problem. Wear a mask only if you show any of the symptoms, are taking care of a patient or are a COVID-19 patient suspected or confirmed to be having it. Please refer to the advisory as depicted in the image below-

Coronavirus mask advisory
[Image source: print advt. in Hindustan Times, 17th March 2020.]

Also, keep in mind that if at all you do wear the blue and white surgical masks that are available at your local pharmacist: (a) they may just keep out dust, nothing more; (b) they should be worn the right way. I have seen people wearing the blue/green masks back to front. Note that the blue/green side should be on the outside and the white one on the inner side. It is the white side that contains the filters and the blue side that stops germs from exiting out and spreading around. Similarly, check with the pharmacist details of the type of mask that you purchase, and how to wear it so that you don't wear it the wrong way. There are, for example, yellow masks with 'FPP' printed on them. The 'FPP' means 'filtering face piece' and the number against it, namely 1,2,3 indicates its rating. These masks may generally be worn by people who require high levels of respiratory protection. I repeat - don't unnecessarily buy such type or any other type of mask unless really required. You can always cover your nose and mouth with a cloth while travelling/moving around in a crowded space. Don't waste masks, please.
