How to submit application for IIT Delhi PhD Admission-2020


Are you a graduate or postgraduate and looking for PhD programme? Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi has advertised an official notification for admission to PhD programmes-2020. Applications are now open for eligible and interested candidates. Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi is among the older-established IITs of India. The institution was established in the year 1961. Later it was declared as Institute of National Importance under the "Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1963" and renamed "Indian Institute of Technology Delhi". Now IIT, Delhi has invited applications for admission to PhD programmes by an official notification.

Eligibility Criteria

For admission to Full time PhD courses following is the eligibility criteria:
  1. M.Tech./M.E./M.D./ or equivalent - 60% marks or 6.00 CGPA on a 10-point scale (for General/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)/EWS category students), 55% marks or 5.50 CGPA (For SC/ST/PwD category candidates)
  2. M.Sc./MBA/M.A./ M.B.B.S. or equivalent - 60% marks or 6.00 CGPA on a 10-point scale (for General/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)/EWS category students), 55% marks or 5.50 CGPA (For SC/ST/PwD category candidates) and GATE/ CSIR/UGC NET/ICAR/ICMR/DSTINSPIRE fellowship qualified.
  3. B.E. /B.Tech. or equivalent - 70% marks or 7.00 CGPA on a 10-point scale (for General/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)/EWS category students), 65% marks or 6.50 CGPA (For SC/ST/PwD category candidates) and GATE/CSIR/UGC NET/ICAR/DST INSPIRE Fellowship qualified.


For admission to Part time or Full time sponsored PhD courses following is the eligibility criteria:
  1. M.E./M.Tech./M.S.(R)/M.D. or Equivalent
  2. B.E./B.Tech./M.Sc./M.A./M.B.A./MBBS or equivalent, from CFTIs/Central Universities with one year experience
  3. B.E./B.Tech./M.Sc./M.A./M.B.A./MBBS or equivalent, and working in IIT Delhi (Project or Regular) with one year experience. These candidates will have to apply through proper channel.
  4. B.E./B.Tech./M.Sc./M.A./MBA/MBBS or equivalent, from institutions other than CFTIs/Central Universities with two year experience.


Note: For these courses employees from Public Sector Undertakings or Government Departments or Research and Development Organizations or Private Industries (approved by Faculty Boards) can only apply.

Course Work and Other Academic Requirements

  • The candidates possessing a B.Tech./ M.Sc./ M.A. or equivalent degree will have to complete a minimum of 12 or 20 credits (depending on the programme) with a minimum required DGPA of 7.50 and CGPA of 7.00.
  • The candidates holding an M.Tech. or equivalent degree holders need to complete a minimum of 6* credits with a minimum required DGPA of 7.50 and CGPA of 7.00.

Admission Process

To select the candidates for admission to the PhD programmes the Department/Centre/School concerned will conduct the interview of the shortlisted candidates. Department/Centre/School will organize a written test or interview of eligible candidates through its Department Research Committee (DRC) / Centre Research Committee (CRC)/ School Research Committee (SRC). It will be the sole decision of DRC/CRC/SRC to conduct a written test, or interviews, or other ways or testing, in order to screen the candidates.
Note: Foreign nationals will not be considered as eligible for these programmes against this advertisement.
Selected candidates must join the Institute within 4 weeks after the issue of the admission offer.

Program Duration

For M.Tech or other masters degree holders PhD duration will be a minimum 2 years whereas For B. Tech. or equivalent qualifications candidate minimum registration duration will be 3 years. However, these can be submitted in a period of maximum of 7 years.

Financial Assistance/Scholarship

There will be a provision of financial assistance or scholarships for full-time PhD Students. The tuition fee will be waived off for SC/ST/PwD students.

How to Apply

Every year applications for admission to PhD programmes are requested from eligible candidates by official advertisement in the Employment Newspaper and official website in the month of March (first semester) and in the month of October (second semester).
Application are to be submitted online by visiting the website of Indian Institute of Delhi and register and login to fill application form.
Note: Applications are being accepted in online mode only. There is no need to submit a hard copy of the application form.

Application Fee

There is an application fee of Rs. 200/- required to be paid by General/OBC/EWS category candidates. While SC/ST/PwD categories candidates need to pay Rs. 50/-. Besides, the bank charges will be borne by the candidate.

Refund of Fees

If any candidate does not wish to join the program, in that case, the whole amount of fees/other charges deposited by the candidates will be refundable after deduction of Rs.1,000/-. Candidates must pay the dues and apply for a refund on or before the date of registration on the prescribed form (available from the P.G. Section, IIT Delhi or the Institute Website: http://www.iitd.ac.in). If a candidate resigns after registration, only the security deposit will be refunded.

  • Submission of online application starts: March 02, 2020 (12.00 noon)
  • Last date for submission of online application: March 30, 2020 (04.00 pm)
  • Last date for submission of application fee online: March 30, 2020 (04.00 pm)
  • Dates for Test / Interview: Starts from May 13, 2020 – June 10, 2020
  • Date of Orientation and Registration for new students: July 24-25, 2020
  • Commencement of classes: July 27, 2020
