Benefits of Smart Classes in Schools

Most of the schools are adopting Smart Classes or the Zoom Classes as a method of teaching in their schools along with the traditional way of teaching. The essay here gives the benefits of the smart classes and how it could prove to be productive for the children. The topic is a good essay topic and can provoke the students to write more on their own.

Smart Classes are classes with visual aids to support the chapter or theory being taught. It is a well-equipped class with the latest technologies to give a visual presentation on the multimedia screen with respect to the topics being taught. The teacher here uses presentations, animations, pictures, etc for explaining instead of the traditional ways using chalks, books, and blackboards. These visuals could be prepared by the teacher himself or by some outside agency. Few agencies are involved in making videos for the different classes according to subjects and topics.

How is a smart classroom set up

Normally, the general classroom is turned into a smart classroom with the required equipment put in place. This way the teacher can use both, the traditional ways as well as the smart class ways for explaining. However, few schools have separate smart classrooms. The smart classroom has a projector screen, whiteboard, overhead projector, CPU, UPS, speakers, microphone, laser pointers, internet connection, etc. When the smart class is on, the lights are turned off and the window screens are also put properly to make the room a little dark. This helps in proper visualization of the videos being played on the screen.

Benefits of smart classes

It has been observed that smart classes are liked by the students more. This can be due to the following points:
  • Easy learning through visuals
  • Students are able to absorb the lessons easily through the visuals. Videos, animations, pictures, and graphs make learning easier as well as in a fun way. Students are able to remember the topics more when they see it rather than when they hear it. This method of teaching is more engaging for the students rather than the traditional way of talking over a topic.
  • Paperless classroom
  • The books are not used for teaching here. Instead, the multimedia screen plays the role of the books. Students do not have to write the notes as well. Understanding is better when they see the topics in a pictorial way rather than hear on the topics. They can also come back to the particular slide if they need it later.
  • Vast online study material
  • When the smart class is coupled with the internet, the students can have access to the online materials also. They can easily refer to the internet for any related material. For example, if the topic on the screen is on 'Coal', students with the help of the teacher can also find out over the internet, the places in South Africa where coal is found in abundance. They can also search for any related topic. Online materials allow the students to search outside the textbooks.
  • Worksheets and Brain Games/Teasers
  • There are also few worksheets and brain teasers at the end of the topics in the materials prepared by the outsourced agency. Else the teachers also provide a few worksheets or questions after the topic is taught. These worksheets test the understanding of the students. If they are not able to answer them properly, they can immediately go back to the topic.

No doubt, smart classes are easier and convenient for the teachers and the students alike. But they also come with a few cons. There are few costs involved in them like the initial installations, proper and regular maintenances of the gadgets and of course the training of the faculties taking such classes. Besides, there are also situations of technical faults that also involve costs. However, the above few points are nothing when the benefits of smart glasses are being counted. Smart classes indeed make the students more involved in the topics. The students are thus encouraged to perform better and increase their own productivity.

With the improvement in technologies in the future, it can be expected that smart classes will have even more benefits for the education of the students.

The basic classroom problem for a teacher is that he or she cannot arrange all the teaching aids required for her class as it is time consuming, costly and difficult to present in the given 40 to 45 minutes time frame. Hence it is better to opt for visual aids helping the children learn better as they can visualise the information and co-relate with her message. The teacher has to be quick enough in arranging her clippings much ahead of her classroom periods so that it is just at the tip of her finger, in a snap of time.

The student-teacher ratio was a concern since longtime. This was more a problem in government schools and government-aided private schools. During my school days, there were about sixty students in one class. The noise in the class, even if each only murmured, used to make our teacher say it looked like a market. However, things started changing and it became a general scene that each class has around 35 to forty students only.

In states like Kerala, even government schools have started having smart classes and becoming smart schools. In about a few years this article will become irrelevant as everyone will be knowing what is a smart class or smart school as they will be sending their children to smart classes schools only.
