About Doctoral Fellow Programme

Doctoral Level Fellowship Programme was initiated by the National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Mumbai (NITIE) in 1984. This programme is recognized by Ministry of HRD as equivalent to PhD of any Indian University. It is an interdisciplinary programme which covers all areas of research like Engineering/ Technology, Management, Economics, Commerce, Social-Sciences, Life Sciences and Pure Sciences etc.
This program selects the candidates with good academics and who are having the motivation and capabilities of being an excellent researcher and want to research at the national as well as international levels. And they may become competent enough for a career in academics, research, business, and consulting. After this fellowship programme candidates may get opportunities to be placed in academics, research or any company or industry. NITIE has invited applications from interested and eligible candidates for this Doctoral Fellow Program for the academic session 2020-21.

Prospective candidate

The doctoral fellow programme admits scholars in three categories, Direct, External and Sponsored.
  1. Direct Candidates
    All eligible candidates with sound academic background and research potential who wish to pursue Research for the Fellow Programme as full-time research scholars in NITIE. They are eligible to get a monthly stipend and yearly contingency grant.
  2. External and Sponsored Candidates
    External and sponsored candidates are those who are already in full-time employment in any industry, academic or research organisation. They must have a good academic background and research potential. They should be interested to pursue the Fellow Program simultaneously with their employment.

Types of Programme

The doctoral fellow programme is running under two categories. A candidate can apply in any of the suitable categories as mentioned below:
  1. Regular Full-time
    Regular full-time candidates will pursue the full-term residential program and receive financial assistance as per MHRD guidelines.
    Full-time Candidates With Financial Assistance: In this category, students will work full-time during Fellow Degree Programme. The candidate will also receive financial assistance from the Institute as per the latest MHRD guidelines. Daily attendance is a must. During this scholarship period, candidates will not be allowed to take up any employment either full-time or part-time.
    Full-time Candidates Without Financial Assistance: Candidates without financial Assistance: A student in this category works full-time for his/her Fellow Degree. He/she does not receive assistantship from the Institute.
  2. Sponsored
    The Programme also givers opportunities to sponsored candidates from Industry, Academic Institutions, Government and other organizations for admission. However, these candidates will not provide any financial assistance.
    Full-time Sponsored: In this category, candidates will be sponsored by a recognized R & D organization, government organization, Academic Institute or Industry for their research work in the Institute on a full-time basis. In this case, NITIE does not provide any assistantship to these students.
    Part-time Sponsored: In this category, a professionally employed person can pursue the Doctoral Fellow Program while continuing his/her employment duties. In this case, NITIE does not provide any assistantship to such a student. After selection, such candidates will have to stay on the campus for one-year regular course work. Further, these candidates will have to carry out their research work largely in the parent organization under the overall guidance provided by a faculty member of the Institute along with a local guide from the organization, if required.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. For Regular Full-time Candidates
    • Candidate must have hold Master's degree or equivalent in any of the subjects like Engineering/ Technology, Management, Economics, Commerce, Social Sciences, Life sciences and Pure Sciences from recognized University/ Institution.
    • They must have secured 60% aggregate marks in the Master's degree. There will be a relaxation of 5% marks in case of SC/ST/PwD (Person with Disability) candidates.
    • The candidates who are in their final year and is going to appear in their final examination are also eligible to apply. They will have to submit their result latest by September 30, 2020.
    • Preference will be given to the candidates who will have Work Experience or Projects Experience or Research Publications in these areas.
    • There will be seat reservation for SC/ST/OBC-NC(Non-Creamy) and PwD candidates as per Govt. of India rules.
    For Sponsored Candidates
    • Candidate must have hold Master's degree or equivalent in any of the subjects like Engineering/ Technology, Management, Economics, Commerce, Social Sciences, Life sciences and Pure Sciences from recognized University/ Institution.
    • They must have secured 60% aggregate marks in the Master's degree. There will be a relaxation of 5% marks in case of SC/ST/PwD (Person with Disability) candidates.
      Besides, the candidates from reputed Industry/Academia should have two years of full-time work experience as on the last date of application.
    • Such candidates need to produce sponsorship and relieving certificate from the employer at the time of joining as per the proforma available on the website of NITIE.
    • After selection, for completion of one-year regular course work such candidates, must stay in the campus.

Number of fellowships

Since the beginning of this fellow programme nearly 50 Doctoral Fellowship Doctoral Degrees have been awarded. Now under this programme, more than 60 candidates are enrolled. On average, four Fellowships are awarded each year.

Financial assistance

Financial assistance will be provided only to the Regular Full-time candidates as per MHRD guidelines. However, a candidate must have qualified GATE/NET-JRF to be eligible for financial assistance. qualification. For grant of financial assistance, candidates must fulfil any one of the following criteria:
  • The candidate must have a master's degree or equivalent in Engineering/ Technology through GATE qualification preferably within the last five years.
  • The candidate must have master's degree or equivalent in Engineering/ Technology, Management, Economics, Commerce, Social Sciences, Life Sciences or Pure Sciences and qualified GATE/NET-JRF last date of submission of application.

Selection procedure

NITIE will conduct a written test for the selection of suitable candidates. In addition to the written test, writing skill test, research presentation, and personal interviews will also be conducted. Candidate's past academic achievements will also be considered.

How to apply?

  • Application is to be submitted through ONLINE mode only.
    First of all, interested and eligible candidates will have to register themselves at Online Admission Portal on NITIE website.
  • The candidates are requested to read the all instructions before filling the application form available at "Instructions to Apply Online" at Admissions Portal.
  • The candidates need to submit their research proposal (Maximum 1500 words) as per the Guidelines for preparation of research proposal available on the website. The Research Proposal must be related to the Areas mentioned above.

What is the Application Fee?

The candidates will have to submit an application fee. Details of application fee are as follows:
  • Rs.1000/- (For General candidates)
  • Rs.500/- (For SC/ST/PwD candidates)
Besides, bank charges will also be applicable.
The application fee is non-refundable and can be paid online.
