How to become a teacher in India through NCERT-CEE for B.Ed., M.Ed. RIE admissions
Want to know how to take up a teaching career in India? Those aspiring for a teaching career in India need to have a recognized graduate or post-graduate Degree. An option to pursue this is at one of the Regional Institutes of Education (RIEs) in India which are units of NCERT. Admission to RIEs is through a Common Entrance Exam (CEE). This article provides complete information about NCERT CEE-2020, including the list of courses, eligibility criteria for each, the online application procedure, etc.
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), New Delhi has announced the schedule for online registrations and applications for admission into teacher education programs at the various Regional Institutes of Education, known as RIEs, that are under the umbrella organization of NCERT. It is through the RIE course that one can get excellent training on educational techniques and teaching methodologies. It is important to note that one of the requirements is to have a valid domicile certificate from the competent authority of the particular State where the RIE is located to which you are seeking admission.RIE courses, seats and eligibility criteria
B.Ed. course
This is a two-year professional course on successful completion of which you can teach upper primary children, middle-level students of classes 6 to 8, secondary level students of classes 9 and 10, and students of the senior secondary level, namely of classes 11 and 12 if you have a postgraduate qualification as well.
Number of seats: (i) 50 each at RIE Ajmer, Bhopal and Bhubaneswar for Science and Mathematics Group and also for Social Science and Language Group; (ii) 25 each at RIE Mysuru and at NERIE, Shillong for these Groups.
Eligibility: You need to have at least 50% marks either in the Bachelor's Degree exam and/or in the Master's Degree exam in Sciences. Those with a minimum of 50% marks in Bachelor's in Engineering or Technology with a specialization in Science or Maths or scoring minimum 50% in Bachelor's Degree and/or in the Master's Degree in Social Sciences/Humanities are also eligible to apply. Note that there is a relaxation of 5% marks for those seeking admission in SC, ST or PwD categories.B.A. B.Ed. course
This is a four-year program that focuses on Social Science and Humanities. With the option to take up one Language and two Social Science subjects, on successful completion of this course, you can take up the post of a Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT) in Social Science and of a TGT Language as well.
Number of seats: 50 each at RIE Ajmer, and Bhubaneswar and 40 each at RIE Bhopal and Mysuru.
Eligibility: You should have passed the +2/Higher Secondary/Senior Secondary or equivalent exam in Science and Commerce streams or in a stream of Arts with minimum 50% marks in aggregate in 2018 or 2019 or appearing or already appeared in 2020. There is a relaxation of 5% marks for SC, ST, and PwD category candidates.
B.Sc. B.Ed. course
This is a four-year course on successful completion of which you can take up a job as a science and maths teacher for upper primary and secondary school students.
Number of seats: 50 each at RIE Ajmer, and Bhubaneswar for both, Physical Science Group (PCM) and for Biological Science Group (CBZ), and 40 each at RIE Bhopal and Mysuru for both these groups.
Eligibility: (i) For the PCM Group, it is required to have passed the +2 level exam with Physics, Chemistry, and Maths (Maths or Statistics is acceptable); (ii) For the CBZ Group, it is required to have passed Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Biology or Biotechnology is acceptable).
Note: The +2 or Higher Secondary or Senior Secondary exam or an equivalent exam, as the case may be, should be a recognized one with minimum 50% marks in aggregate of the qualifying exam (relaxation of 5% marks for SC, ST, and PwD candidates). Only those who have passed the aforementioned exam in 2018, 2019 or appearing /appeared in 2020 are eligible to apply for admission for the B.Sc., B.Ed. course.
M.Ed. course
This is a two-year professional course in which you can take up a specialization in either elementary education or in secondary and senior secondary education. Other than a teaching career, on successful completion of the M.Ed. course you can take up an administrative job in an educational institute, work on curriculum development, pursue research projects, etc.
Number of seats: 30 each at RIE Ajmer, Bhubaneswar, Bhopal, and Mysuru.
Eligibility: You should have scored a minimum of 50% marks or an equivalent grade (there is 5% relaxation for SC, ST, and PwD candidate) in these courses from a recognized college or university or an institute that is recognized by affiliating universities: (i) B.Ed.; (ii) B.A.B.Ed./B.A.Ed/B.Sc.B.Ed/B.Sc.Ed.; (iii) B.El.Ed.; (iv) D.El.Ed. with a Bachelor's degree in Arts/Science (with 50% marks in each)M.Sc.Ed. course
This is a six-year integrated course with two semesters in a year, each semester having 16 weeks. On successful completion of this course, you receive a post-graduate degree, namely M.Sc.Ed. in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry that will enable you to become a teacher at the senior secondary school level in the subjects of physics, chemistry, and mathematics.
Number of seats: This course is offered only at RIE Mysuru. There are 15 seats each for M.Sc.Ed. (Physics), M.Sc.Ed (Chemistry), and M.Sc.Ed (Mathematics)
Eligibility: You should have passed the +2/Higher Secondary/ Senior Secondary or any equivalent exam that is of a recognized University/Board with minimum 50% marks in aggregate (relaxation of 5% marks for SC, ST, and PwD candidates) and have passed with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) (Maths or Statistics) at the +2 level. Those who have passed the aforementioned exam in 2018, 2019 and are appearing/appeared in 2020 only will be allowed to apply.
Additional center: You can also appear for CEE-2020 if you wish to pursue the B.Sc. B.Ed. course or the B.A. B.Ed. course, both of which are four-year integrated courses, at Prarambh School for Teacher Education Jhajjar, Haryana.How to apply
Register your name with a valid email ID and mobile number at the official CEE-2020 website latest by 4th May 2020. On getting the one-time password (OTP)/user credentials that are shown on the screen, you can then proceed to log in and fill in the online application. Ensure that all the details are filled in correctly as you cannot edit any of the data once you click on the 'submit' button at the end of the application procedure. Note that you can use the same registration ID to apply for more than one course, but ensure that you are fulfilling the eligibility requirements of each course, including the domicile requirement.
The application fee has to be paid through online mode only. The fee is Rs. 1000/- for General category candidates and OBC candidates and Rs. 500/- for SC, ST, and PwD candidates.Important dates
