We all know that Earth day is about to come, but now the present situation is completely different from previous years as we all are staying in our homes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fear of coronavirus pandemic is all around and we are obeying the government orders of lockdown.
What can we do?
We celebrate Earth Day in April with full zeal each year. But the question that arises in our mind is that how can we celebrate this occasion while staying at home? There are so many alternative ways we can follow at home and from the home.
Less use of the AC: The atmosphere is clean and the pollution level is quite low due to lockdown. So try to avoid AC while keeping windows open most of the time.
Less use of the refrigerator: Similarly, the use of the refrigerator can also be reduced as much as possible and eat fresh stuff. It would cause less pressure on the refrigerator and also less energy consumption.
Kitchen Gardening: We can spend our time utilizing our balcony and terrace for kitchen gardening. Household wastes can be segregated into biodegradable and non-biodegradable. Biodegradable waste can then be used further in terrace/balcony gardening. It would not only provide us with organic vegetables but also minimize waste generation from our houses which come from the market as packaging materials.
Bird Nest Making: Bird nests can be prepared by using old cartons and coconut shells. It will not only provide shelter for our urban birds but also help us to reuse waste material. It will also make our kids aware of nature while engaging in eco-friendly activities.
Use of Refused RO Water: Nowadays, most of the houses have RO. So RO outlet water can be stored in the bucket and can be used further for irrigation of terrace garden, floor mopping, and cloth washing.
Webinars on Earth Day: Webinars can be conducted to create awareness on Earth Day among friends and social groups or the public.
Online Competitions on Earth Day: A drawing competition or essay writing competition can also be organized through video conferencing for school kids and further, a drawing book can be compiled and published on the schools' website. Competitions can be divided into essay writing, drawing, slogan writing, poster competition, poem writing, and quiz or puzzle competition, etc. A digital certificate can also be issued to winners for increasing their interest towards nature.
Online Workshop/Conference: If you are associated with a school/ college/university or are a teacher then you can organize online workshop/conference on Earth Day.
Write Blogs: If you are interested in writing you can write blogs on Earth Day. You can also send messages on social media like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp etc.
Best Out of Waste: You can make things from waste in your home and can post your recorded videos on YouTube, Facebook, and WhatsApp to create awareness among people.
Energy Saving: Switch off lights for 1-2 hours and circulate this message to your family and friends circle.
