About the HRI Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Harish Chandra Research Institute (HRI) is welcoming applications to its active postdoctoral programme in mathematics. Under this programme fellows will get an opportunity to work and learn in diverse areas of mathematics like Number Theory, Cryptography, Group Theory, Algebraic Geometry and Differential Geometry etc.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The applicants must hold a PhD degree in Mathematics.
  • As bridging postdoctoral fellowship programme is no longer available at HRI, therefore the applicant must have a final PhD degree at the time of joining the institute.
  • Selected Fellows will get an opportunity to work with a group of mathematicians in the areas of Algebraic Geometry, Cryptography, Differential Geometry Group Theory, Harmonic Analysis, Number Theory and Representation Theory.
  • Candidates with an externally funded fellowship can also join HRI only after fulfilling the criteria for being selected as a regular Post Doctoral Fellow (PDF).

Duration of Postdoctoral Fellowships

Postdoctoral fellowships will be of one-year duration initially. It may be further extended for a period of up to three years.

Application Process

  1. The interested and eligible candidates will have to submit their application complete in all respect to the Mathematics PDF Committee.
  2. An application must be prepared as a single pdf file by merging all the requisite documents and should be mailed to the Mathematics PDF Committee at the email:

  4. Please also check that "merged PDF file should not have any blank page". For merging files into a single pdf file candidates can use online software.
Note: Merged pdf file must be merged properly and should be readable.

Documents to be Submitted with Application

The candidates are advised to prepare an application as a single pdf file with the following documents:
  1. Covering letter
  2. Curriculum Vitae. It should contain relevant academic details like the area of specialisation, Name of the thesis supervisor, Date of PhD degree or PhD thesis submission date, whichever is available, and details of prior PDF positions held if any.
  3. List of publications
  4. A list of referees
  5. A research proposal for the next two years
  6. PhD degree
  7. Previous PDF experience, if any.
  8. Two recommendation letters. One from the applicant's thesis supervisor. These letters should be mailed directly by the referees to the Mathematics PDF Committee at the email address

Note: Documents No. 6 and 7 are mandatory for considering fellowship at a higher level.

Deadline for Application Submission

The last date for application submission is 30 June 2020.

Selection Intimation

The selected candidates will be informed by the end of July 2020 through e-mail.
Important Note: The PDF offer will remain valid till the end of the given session after that the offer will get expire if the candidate fails to join. These candidates will not be able to apply again in the next sessions.

When applications of HRI postdoctoral fellowship are accepted?
Applications for the fellowship will be considered three times every year, with deadlines on 28th Feb, 30th June and 30th October.
Can I apply at any time of the year?
You can apply at any time. The applications received will be kept on record until the nearest of any of the deadlines.
I sent an application in May. Can I join in the October session?
No. The application should be sent for a particular session only if you are able to join in that specific session immediately.
When will the intimation of selection for the Fellowship be given?
The selected candidates will be informed by the end of March/July/November through e-mail according to application submission.
What are the obligations for the Fellowship?
1. The Post Doctoral Fellow will have to give a 40 minutes' talk on his/her current research work, within one month of joining HRI, in front of a general audience. 2, Candidates will have to acknowledge the Dept. of Atomic Energy, Govt of India, for the financial support, as well as the Harish-Chandra Research Institute for the research facilities provided, in all the publications of the work done during the Fellowship tenure at HRI. 3. The Post Doctoral Fellow will prepare and submit a comprehensive report at the end of the research.
What are the provisions for the second-year extension?
After completion of the first year, the candidate will have to submit his/her updated CV along with a brief research report and research publications done in the first year. After the Fellowship talk as mentioned earlier, an extension will be given for the second year.
Is there any time limit for applying for an extension?
Yes. For extension, the candidate must apply at least one month before the end of the tenure.
