Becoming a sonographer takes some time but it's well worth it. If you're wondering what steps to take, keep reading!1. Two-Year Program
You'll need an associate's degree first which is a two-year program. Qualifications include a high-school diploma or GED with classes in physics, algebra, and basic science.
If you've got an education in a health-related field, you may qualify for a one-year certification program.2. Find a Program
Find a school that has a good reputation and whose students get jobs after finishing the program. Make sure the program is accredited.
Look for a school that offers live ultrasound training courses. It's convenient if they offer some online classes as well.3. Sonography Curriculum
There's a specific curriculum for sonographers. It's the "National Education Curriculum for Sonography." It includes four main areas:
• General education
• Health-related education
• Ultrasound tech courses
• Sub-specialties
General courses include classes such as psychology, math, physics, and communications.4. Financial Aid
Be sure and apply for financial aid if you need it. Apply for scholarships and grants first because you don't have to repay those. Start by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Getting certified from one of these bodies opens up your job opportunities. Most employers prefer certified and registered sonographers.6. Continuing Education Credits
Once you're certified, stay on top of your continuing education credits. Are you certified through ARDMS? You'll get audited every so often and you'll need proof of your continuing medical education credits (CME).
The other certifying bodies have CME requirements as well.7. State Licensing
Only a few states require licensing since the professional organizations voluntarily certify and register qualified ultrasound technicians.
